Commercial Description:
The absolute top quality in the hierarchy of the St. Bernardus beers. It is also the beer with the highest alcohol content (10.50 %). A dark ivory coloured beer with a high fermentation. The show piece of the brewery. Thanks to its soft and unconditionally genuine aroma, the beer can be smoothly tasted. The Abt has a very fruity flavour.

Bottle. Pours a perfect abbott. Deep red with creamy head. Lots of esters, some banana. Taste is fruits, esters, malt, yeast.. you name it. Palate is thinner than expected, perhaps this is a young specimen. However, the thin body leads me to believe this will not benefit very much from aging. I hope I am wrong. Ends dry. Great stuff.

Bottle. City Pub. Gothenburg Beer Festival. Clody brown colour with a beige head. Aroma: Malt, spices, yeast, apples, lightly roasted. Taste: Sweet malt, alcohol, spices, yeast, apples, dark fruits, salmiak, a bit of bitterness. The alcohol is apparent with a warming finish.

Pours brown amber with a thin head. Nutty aroma. Flavour is very alcoholic with sweet malt. Not particularly good in my opinion.

To be honest, I drank this a few months ago (4/26/09, per my notes) and rated it for another website. It’s a perfect Quad, one of my favorite beers. Fruity, spicy, perfect.

As a beer lover and someone who has spent years drinking some of the best beers in the world this one comes out close to the top. Only Rochefort 10 and Westy 12 taste better. Just a great all around beer. Who needs flowery adjectives to describe it?

Beer looks dark brown maybe even just the slightest hint of grey but that just might be the way the light is hitting the glass, corn flake sized floaties are everywhere, the beer was capped off with a small tan head that vanished to a bubble ring in a short period of time, beer looks ok but for the style I have seen better. Lots of sweet alcohol in the aroma, floral notes, CRANBERRIES!?!?!?!?!? That seems wrong. After the brew warmed a little more the aroma became softer with more banana coming through and what I believe to be cloves, there is still a touch to much alcohol in my opinion but this still very acceptable. Flavor is wheaty dark banana, a sweet floral alcohol that blends nicely with the smooth malt, there is diffentatly spice in the flavor but I can’t quit get it cinnamon? Cloves maybe? Taste is sharp but not overpowering and leaves a very clean finish , this is a dam good brew just not my favorite quad.

Bottle hauled back from Europe in a dusty backpack carried by a man of courage and honour. Actually the bravery wore thin once I returned home and discovered that St. Bernardus ales are now imported into this piece of terra firma and they just ain’t that hard to find either. Fuck. Oh well I still really looked forward to cracking this...the nectar poured dark murky brown with a medium off-white head. Beautiful aroma of spice, ripe fruits, bread loaf, plums and yeasty notes. A welcomed complexity of flavours blends the malt, fruit and spices effortlessly. A smooth, creamy mouthfeel with the alcohol leaving a nice warming finish. Beautiful beer.
