sfontain (500), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 12, 2005 11.2 oz. bottle from the brand new natural foods store on Sawmill Rd., Columbus, OH. Paid $3.49. This is a perfect-looking beer; very dark garnet color with a thick, frothy, bubbly, everlasting head that leaves froth all the way down the glass; thick globs of yellow floaties abound. Aroma is heavy and full: malts, caramel, dark fruit, rotting vegetables, spicy, alcohol; unfortunately the less apparent smells are too subtle. Flavor is strong and really nice but just not as easily describable as the rest of this beer; taste is malty with sugar and some dark fruits; the alcohol bite is just perfect here, though. Somewhat more carbonated than I was hoping, and barely thin; otherwise silky and not sticky. Overall this is a very solid beer; I think some people do overrate this just a tiny bit; I don’t quite see the complexity in the flavor that some people claim. However, this is a very good beer at a price that isn’t terrible in comparison to some other comparable brews. Very good.
xpimptastikx (21), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 7, 2008 Pours a deep brown with a lingering tan head. Smells of raisins, figs, and caramel. As the temperature rises every sip changes. The closest things to a Westy 12. buzzoven (150), Japan Oct 7, 2008 Glory in a glass. Deep brown dark colour with a speckled tan head. Smell of rum, licorice, coffee, toffee, chocolate mousse. Sipping this is like sucking on angel’s wings...a bounty of desireable tastes just dancing on the tongue; flavours abounding on the palate like some sort of wildflower blooming and bursting. Extremely well balanced and the 10.5% alcohol is felt with a slight burn (aaahhhh) but is very well concealed amongst the rum, oak, malted barley, maple, figs, candied apple, raisins, vanilla, the list goes on and on. I like the jolly parson label as well. Buy or die! Skidds (186), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Oct 6, 2008 Bottle from Pub Italia. Pours a dark brown with a massive and dense off-white head. Aroma mainly of dark fruits (prunes, figs), caramel and some alcohol. The flavour and mouthfeel are creamy with strong notes of brown sugar, dark fruits, caramel, molasses, raisons and chocolate. This is the best beer I have ever had! Try it. branspra (47), Arlington, Virginia, USA Oct 5, 2008 Bottle. Pours with a large head, excellent lacing, and dark brown color. Aromas of molasses, caramel, lime, and plum. Creamy texture with a nearly perfect flavor.
