Deep clear red mahogany pour developing a medium yellowish tan head that shows fair lace. Aroma of dark fruits, leather, and some earthy notes. Smooth, lightly carbonated, with a rich mouthfeel. Decidedly malty, characterized by a caramel sweetness with just a touch of bittering to round it out a bit, leaving a slightly sweet, but not sticky or cloying, finish. Very easy to drink. Amber/brown colour with an average short lasting beige head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts, hops, alcohol. Bubbly champagne mouthfeel though also bit siruppy. Flavour is bitter-sweet with plenty of hops, well roasted malts, good touch of toffee. Very dry finish. Long fruity dry aftertaste. A good champagneish Abbey Dubbel. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 8, 2007 750ml bottle. Pours dark amber color slightly hazy with a tall beige head. Very sweet aroma with hints of plum, caramel, liqourice, bread, and spice. Very sweet up front with a cool dry liqourice flavor blending with the melted caramel and fruity palate. Very warming and well meshed flavor. The high carbonation kept this beer alive, never feeling heavy and really kicked the spices in the arse to come say hello. The finish was dry and spicy with a long lingering sweetness into the aftertaste. Very nicely made belgian brown or dubbel or whatever it is. bb (2941), Martinez, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 31, 2006 Bottle. Reddish brown beer with a nice light beige head. Rich caramel malt aroma with lots of spice and some slight roast and yeast. Caramel malt flavor with lots of licorice and some backing bitterness. Licorice lingers and lasts a long long time - too much licorice for me. Slight alcohol presence along with some plum fruitiness.
This is the bottle that had it in for me. The cork wouldn’t budge and took 2 minutes of pulling to loosen it. Getting frustrated I turned to look at the top of the cork - why I don’t know. Anyway - HUGE pop and luckily just a glancing blow an inch and a half from the eye. Sheesh unclemattie (2442), Georgia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 3/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 31, 2006 Reddish brown color. Off white/ slight rust colored foamy head. Fruit, spice, charcoal, banana, bread, nuts, licorice, anise. Fresh green fennel aroma with roasted caramel malts!! Tastes of malt, and a little corn pops. Slight bitter finish. Aroma is much more magical than the taste... Very light textured. Looks and smells were very deceiving to the taste of this bottle.
