Commercial Description:
This brown ale has a marked ruby brown colour with a generous and lasting head. It has a distinctive aroma reflecting the wide range of ingredients used in its production. The fruitiness resulting from its fermentation blends harmoniously with a dominant liquorice and caramel flavour. The body is decidedly malty. The bitterness is the result of a complex alchemy between the fine hops and special malts used. These give St Feuillien Brune a typical dark chocolate appearance.

750ml bottle sampled in mid-May ’06: Pours a clear mahogany ruby brown with a nicely-lacing, big off-white head. Lightly sweet, bready earthy dark caramel biscuity Belgian yeasty aroma. Body starts with a bittersweet earthy malty with some dark chocolate notes. Finishes more dry and slightly bitter. A nice abbey dubbel.

Bottled. Dark brownish copper colour, mediumsized brown bubbly head. Aroma is chocolate, slight roasted malts and some flowery hops weak in the background. Flavour is roasted malts along with licorace and chocolate. Some slight hints of metal, but the metal disappears, once the beer gets a bit warmer. Long toffeeish hoppy aftertaste. Hides it’s alcohol well. A bit too biting/crispy carbonation, otherwise very nice.

Bottle. Creamy light brown head. Hazy brown body. Fresh and fruity aroma. Well rounded hoppy flavor with caramel a touch of licorice and astonishingly much carbon dioxide, alcohol contents well hidden by the carbonation.

On tap at Ris Ras Filongongong, Aarhus, August 2006. Chestnut brown colour. Served way too cold, which effectively stifled the aroma and I was a bit too thirsty to nurse it until it had warmed sufficiently to display its wares. Lots of pruney fruit and fat caramel malt on the palate, with touches of liquorice. Not too sweet, with some tart notes on the finish which resulted in a relatively easy drinking beer for the strength and style. Decent but I didn’t really find anything to lift it into the realms of excellence. Perhaps the bottle I have at home will convince me otherwise when I open it.

750 ml corked bottle with the weirdest cage I’ve ever seen. It has a metal strip that goes across the middle of the cork and keeps it buckled down. Appears a hazy brown amber with a small light tan head that fades into a fizzy cap. Scattered lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of brown sugar, caramel, spicy Belgian yeast, cream, vanilla. Taste is of the same aromas with some earthy, spiced notes. Mouthfeel is smooth, sugary, and cakey. I refilled a few times on this one. Nice and enjoyable.

Bottle. Copper brown color with a small off-white head. Malty, bready, yeasty aroma with mild alcohol notes. Starts sweet and ends sweeter, with a smooth full body.

Reddish brown, clear, with ample light colored brown head. Smells of fresh baked bread, cloves, and cinnamon. Sweet and acidic with a long lasting malt finish.
