Commercial Description:
This brown ale has a marked ruby brown colour with a generous and lasting head. It has a distinctive aroma reflecting the wide range of ingredients used in its production. The fruitiness resulting from its fermentation blends harmoniously with a dominant liquorice and caramel flavour. The body is decidedly malty. The bitterness is the result of a complex alchemy between the fine hops and special malts used. These give St Feuillien Brune a typical dark chocolate appearance.

Medium size light tan head on a deep ruby and brown body. Head retention was quite good though it left very little lacing. The aroma was the highlight of this beer, to me, mainly malt characters with liquorice, alcohol, brown sugar and figs. Taste got better as the beer warmed, not as thick or complex as I would like but still quite drinkable.

The beer is quite well carbonated and pours with a frothy, ample, three-finger thick tan head that forms a rocky surface after it falls back down. The beer is a deep amber color that is quite dark, when held up to the light the beer shows a brilliantly clear, deep ruby color. The aroma is quite fruity with a sharp spicy almost woody note. There is some sort of note that reminds me of nuts, raisins, and a hint of apricots.

The taste is quite creamy up front, and a bit full on the palate. It is a bit sweet as well, which accentuates fruit notes like raisins, figs and a hint of apricots. The finish has a certain nuttiness to it that seems to be derived from a bit of roasted malt. There is a bit of a mouth drying astringent note in the finish as well. As the beer warms up it lessens the sweetness a bit and accentuates some of the roast notes that picks up a hint of coffee to it.

All in all this is a pretty tasty beer, I could wish for a bit more complexity, but it certainly is right about where I was expecting it to be. This is a nice beer, and I am quite happy to be working my way through a 750ml bottle this evening.

33 cl bottle, ’bbe’ Dec 2005; brewed at du Bocq. Very murky, almost like a puddle of muddy water. Chestnut brown with a strong dark red shine. Light brown head that doesn’t hold well but gives some lace. Aroma: very gentle; malty with some estery notes: nuts, cocoa powder, pears. Sweetish taste with a bitter background; nuts and pears and a strong, sharp bitterness in the aftertaste. Teasing, effervescent palate, good body, dry finish.

Pours hazy brown with small tan head. Aroma of malty brown sugar, some nuts and toffee, some port, caramel, and dark fruit. Tastes malty, brown sugary and figgy, with a semi-dry finish. There is a definite molasses note, and some funky notes as it warms.

Had during a beer tasting party. Poured light brown and had a hint of peach in the aroma. Taste didn’t live up to interesting smell but still decent.

750 Ml bottle lot # 135376. Poured a light brown with a medium light brown frothy head. Molasses/caramel, bread a touch of orange and some alcohol came through in the aroma. Medium bodied, I picked up a caramel/toffee sweetness, some molasses that European yeast some spices and a light hop that was a bit light and left too much sweetness on the palet. Overall this was a very satisfying brew, a bit sweet especially for this hop head.

Strong liquorice aroma. Red-brown colour with beige head. Taste is sweet and fruity throughout. Well carbonated, light to medium body. Good, but not the most complex brew around.
