pantanap (1322), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 6, 2009 12oz bottle. another bottle that has been sitting around for awhile..... pours mostly black, medium consistency with a nice tan head that quickly disappears... aroma of bittersweet chocolate, a little more roast than smokey.... flavors have held up nicely with your standard chocolate notes with an underlying roast component. finishes on the sweeter side. tad thin from a mouthfeel standpoint but this was a pretty pleasant surprise. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Nov 1, 2009 12oz bottle from Once Upon a Vine, Richmond. A bit long in the tooth. Impressive pour, thick dark brown with a fluffy head and some sticky lacing. Deep dark roasted aroma with hints of char and maple. Mouthfeel has thinned out a bit, and it seems to have oxidized a bit. Still enjoyable, almost like toned down aged Storm King. GG (1612), NorCal, California, USA May 8, 2009 I know this beer has a few years on it, as I received it in a trade back in ’07. Man this is one seriously fantastic beer. I enjoyed every drop of this one, and tried licking the inside of my glass so as to not waste any of it. I enjoyed it that much.
The aroma has so many levels of goodness it’s difficult on where to start. The first things that really jumped out at me was the old leather and tobacco notes (Captain Black if anyone remembers this smell). Vanilla, lightly blackened malt, and scorched dark chocolate really round out the nose. Appearance is jet black, oily with some great legs. Head was 1/2" thick, brown and scant in appearance. Flavor has a fantastic dark chocolate angle that just keeps going for days. Slightly smokey with just a smidge of ash that I enjoyed in the minimal amount that was there. Whoppers, more pipe tobacco, vanilla and raisins really round out the rest of this great beer. I don’t recall who sent it my way, but a sincere thank you. Great, great beer. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Apr 13, 2009 Bottle: I forgot who sent this my way, but thanks! Near opaque pour with a light brown head. Tarry, gritty aroma with lots of burnt dark fruits. Very light and fluffy feel (low ABV for an Imperial). Dry and tart flavor. Quite tart upfront- almost vinous with a tart fruitiness (grape)- also woody with unsweetened bitter dark chocolate and residual mocha character. A tart, dry, unique and elegant stout. Pretty good. unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Mar 19, 2009 Poured an opaqu black color with a small dark tan head. Big roasty aroma with plenty of coffee. Some fruit and chocolate also in the mix. Roasty flavor. Some more chocolate. The finish leaves a lot of roast in the mouth with a touch of alcohol. Creamy feel. Very big on the aroma and flavor. I like this one jgb9348 (2492), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Mar 5, 2009 Pitch black coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and some peanuts. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavours throughout with a good malt backbone and plentiful amounts of coffee following soon behind. Aftertaste shows some sweet qualities along with a nutty finish. Overall, a damn good stout - especially for wintertime! Definitely worth trying if you can find this one on draught somewhere in the Virginia region. I sampled this beer on draught from Kelly’s Pub in Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 13 January 2007. brentfeesh (1030), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Dec 31, 2008 12oz bottle received in trade at least a year ago. Probably a 2006-2007 bottle. Very dark brown-black pour. Sweet molasses and burnt grains are present in the aroma along with brown sugar. The flavor has molasses and burnt sugars with caramel and other very roasted – burnt grains. Touch of coffee and a little unsweet chocolate as well. Creamy mouth feel. Medium body.
