Deep reddish-brown in color with a soap-bubble head, the beer has an artisinal look to it. Smells of pizza crust, light caramel, and earth. Tasting, too, is a dry, earthy experience with some astringency. Undercarbonated and slightly tangy, but smooth and mature. Woodsy, dry leaf finish. Nice bittering hops in the background. Aroma gives grassy malty characters with freshness written all over it. Taste is very bitter, indeed a malty body, but the amount of hops here are perhaps overkill. Maybe a little to warm, but this could be sessioned foreverr and a day if it is cold enough. JK (2961), Richfield, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 8, 2006 This is completely different from the New Glarus zwickels I have had. Those were light and yellow, but this is cloudy and brown. There is a lighter malt aroma that includes a hint of fermenting fruit and wet dog. The flavor is straightforward with malt and yeast; with the yeast being something I expected after the New Glarus. A hint of sourness but very bitter in an English way, much like a light bitter or mild in a lager style. The bitterness is mostly in the aftertaste. Prostman (1077), Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 8, 2006 This was a good beer that poured a cloudy dark yellow/orange color with a thin head. The beer was crisp and dry and was a good choice for the evening. Recommended. eaglefan538 (2399), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 7, 2006 Poured a nice tan-gold color with a very generous initial head that thinned to a light covering that provided solid lacing. The aroma was mostly of hops. The flavor was very comparable to the altbiers, although not as malty rich. Excellent hop presence (some citrus aspects) that kept this thing exciting, since the caramel malts were fairly mild and underplayed. There was a light buttery presence in the flavor profile, which really was the only negative. Mouthfeel was somewhat creamy and carbonated. Finish was dry and hoppy. EithCubes (2167), Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jun 4, 2006 400th Rating. Swing-top bottle from pivnizub. Murky chestnut-colored pour with no head. Funky smell, cellar with hoppy notes. Tastes rather dark with a lasting and very dry finish. Smoothish feel with yeast, creamy and unfiltered, very earthy tone. Light acidity only noticeable after a five or six swallows. I enjoy this quite a bit, like someone who’s eaten dark chocolate for the first time and not been offended. Coffee/choco notes, too. This must have been what the franks were drinking all those centuries ago – delicious! kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia
