JorisPPattyn (4500), Antwerpen, Belgium Sep 11, 2004 Updated: Oct 5, 2006 I can stand less and less of this brewery’s ideosyncrasies and vandalisings. To rub it in, I compared this beer (under the name St. Idesbald Dubbel) to the original, St. Idesbald Dubbel 1989 from brewery ’t Damberd at Olsene - points in bold
Huge, very fine & dense brownish head, very slowly receding; clear red-amber beer. Much slimmer, creamy-brown head, more variably bubbled; beer itself higher carbonated, but virtually same colour. 4/5 Very sweet, fruity-vinous nose, bit citrus and (little) alchol, ending slightly herbal-like. Musty, earthy, vinous-grapy, super rich smell, even bit of Brett, horsesweat, vegetable patch 9/10 Vinous, aggresively malty beer. Tad bready, defty bitterness from burnt malts, but mainly sweet-malty. Flavour of chlorophyl. Superbly balanced sweet-sour ale, "Traubenzucker", raisins, other fruity notes as very ripe peaches and some bubblegum 8/10 Medium to well-bodied. Alcoholburn obvious, adstringent finish Light to medium bodied, fruity acids, slightly slick mouthfeel 4/5
I have been clement to Huyghe. St. Idesbald Dubbel is the one they harmed the least. They just changed the style from Flemish Oud bruin to Abbey dubbel. In this style, the beer isn’t even half bad. But it cannot shake off this horrible, scorched/alcohol Huyghe thumbprint. What they did to the St. Idesbald Triple is beyond words. The ’t Damberd beer has effortlessly stood out the years. It is a great oud bruin, though a tad to the (too) sweet side. The Triple from ’t Damberd was a world-beater 16/20
NoiZe (947), Zeist, Netherlands Oct 3, 2008 Brown colored brew. Aroma is wine, fruits.
Flavor is fruity, berries, cherries, wine, some sweetness some burned malts. Overall a bit too much fruits. Palate is not nice, sourness and alcoholic. Lubiere (3324), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Sep 27, 2008 A dark clear brown ale with a thick moka head, and lots of fluffy sludge. A very nice sweet caramel with molasses, tobacco leafes and berries. Nice! In mouth, a nutty malt, fragrant, with loads of coriander, molasses, raisins. Rich and pungeant. Pleasantly surprised. Bieropholie import. BB April 2009. Very dark red, healthy off-white head. Strawberry jam aroma, some raspberry too. Quite sour on the tongue - and with healthy carbonation. Curious taste - quite sour and metallic, but not nasty, and some alcohol too. Decent burnt edge, but lacking the fullness I look for in a dubbel. BoBoChamp (729), Gent, Belgium Jul 20, 2008 33cl, from Geers Oostakker, complex brew, hazy, good head, nice brew, the best of the St.-Idesbald-range thewolf (3963), Kolding, Denmark Jun 1, 2008 Bottle, bought @ brygshoppen.dk.
Pours deep, red-brown with a big, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is dried fruits, light chocolate, raisins and caramel. Fine, creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is softly yeasty, finely roasted, sweet chocolate, great balance, raisins, plums. Nice.
