Commercial Description:
In the small village of Meer, north of the city of Antwerp, there used to be an abbey which was famous for its beer named St. Paul. During the French Revolution, the abbey was destroyed and so it was said-one father named Paul, rescued the secret recipes to brew the abbey beer and trust them onto the local Sterkens family, at that time a renowned brewer family. The Sterkens family had been brewing beer since 1654, and their St. Paul abbey beer is still brewed today, respectfully according to the centuries old tradition.

33cl bottle at home, iRate: pours like hazy and very dark over-brewed tea with a large bubbled, fading light tan head. Some floaties. Mix of brown sugar and some raw cane sugar hit your nose first. There is a roast backbone that keeps the sweetness from becoming overbearing. Some raisin and dark fruit jam. An unexpected spice not of ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. A definite cardboard oxidation note. Quite high CO2 level somehow softly and slowly releases itself ok your tongue. Sweet sugar and malt, but not as sweet as the aroma leads you to believe. Decent roast level in the back, although a bit one dimensional. Some indescribable spice character leads to a low hop character. Raisin and a hint of cherry show up on the very tail end. Not bad.

16 oz bottle from Beer World (Largo, FL). Bottle of unknown age. Pours a dark murky brown color with thin tan white head. Aroma is somewhat malty with notes of dark ripe fruit, molasses, caramel and honey along with hints of oxidation. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of dark fruit, roasted coffee, honey, caramel and hints of bread and yeast. Generally medium body with a sweet and malty finish.

Dark brown colour with a creamy beige heavy head. Aroma of burnt coffee and bitter chocolate. Flavor was very sweet and fruity. Thick almost creamy mouthfeel and a very smooth finish.

Retired? Still available in a local drinks shop in Hengelo. Dark brown color. Malt, caramel and peach in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with hints of roast and caramel. Pear. Pleasant, but lacks depth.
