Commercial Description:
In the small village of Meer, north of the city of Antwerp, there used to be an abbey which was famous for its beer named St. Paul. During the French Revolution, the abbey was destroyed and so it was said-one father named Paul, rescued the secret recipes to brew the abbey beer and trust them onto the local Sterkens family, at that time a renowned brewer family. The Sterkens family had been brewing beer since 1654, and their St. Paul abbey beer is still brewed today, respectfully according to the centuries old tradition.

Dark brown coloured, with a small off-white head. Sweet roasted malty aroma with a full malty palate. Finish is light bitter, again with some hints of roasted malts. ending a little more with an alcoholic touch. Good one.

Dark honey aspect. Solid light brown head. Very good lacing. Complex spicy frutal aroma, with notes of caramel and toasted cereal. Complex sweet and bitter taste. Maybe notes of tobacco. It’s a pleasing syrup. Just carbonatation. Very well disguised 6.9% alcohol. Lasting but smooth aftertaste. Aroma turns sweeter as temperature increases.

330ml bottle at <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/ShowPlace.asp? target=blank>St. Veronus in Peterborough, Ontario. Dark brown in colour, last beige head, nice lacing. The aroma is chocolaty, some plums and other dark fruits, some sweetness, raisins. The flavour starts off great just like the aroma, lots of chocolate and caramel malts, good sweetness, noticable yeast, dark fruits. Creamy mouthfeel, mild body, medium carbonation. Finishes pretty quick, slightly sweet. Started off really good but the thin body and quick finish started to bore me really quickly.

Red-brown colour with slight white head. Kinda spicy aromas coupled with fruity tones and some orange. Taste is not as powerful as expected, some fruity tones, a bit vinious and very sweet.

Bottle enjoyed recently at Only Café on Danforth & Donlands, Toronto. Good with the brunch waffles. Fine but nothing extraordinary - the malts were nutty and a touch chocolatey. Balanced highly drinkable package. Wtih brewers like Achel still around we won’t miss this brewery THAT much, will we?

Bottle. A sweet, thin double. Some light mollasses, raisin, caramel. With a slightly watery end. Its drinkable, but felt a little empty.

Very dark reddish brown color with a small, beige head. Rye-pudding-malty aroma with raisins, plums and figs and a hint of alcohol. The flavor is sweetish-malty raisin soup with sourish oud bruin hints, ashes and some alcohol. Medium-bodied, slightly thin, medium-carbonated palate. Wants really hard to be a real abbey beer, but doesn’t quite reach that level. The good thing is, that the sweetness is well balanced.

It took a vigorous pour to coax a small, ecru head from this beer, over a body which was copper/vermillion with density, sans cloudiness. Lemony hops dominate the aroma over roasty cereal grains, sweet Café Mocha, light English toffee and a faint whiff of alcohol that sharpens upon warming. Piercing sourness precedes rich caramel malts and tea bitters with lemon... a flavor that evens out to bittersweet-tartness within a mid-bodied, buttery presence. Very good. It’s a shame that Brouwerij Sterkens has closed its doors.
