Wulfstan (481), California, USA Jun 27, 2008 This is a decent German pilsner and clearly tastes like one, but it also clearly has a slightly rough, thin, mass-produced quality about it. That said, it is drinkable, tasty, and better than Beck’s even if it can’t compare to better German beers. It’s darkish gold with a medium white head steadily shrinking to a thin wispy top and a little weak lace. The aroma is lightly grassy-herbal hops, a light bready quality, hints of sulphur and honey, but all a bit thin and subdued, like a cross between a typical US macro and a good German pilsner, which is kind of what this is. The taste is similar with the stress clearly on the light grassy-herbal hops with a light but dominant bitterness. It’s a bit thin and minerally, with a mineral-water quality and little malt characteristic. It’s a bit weak with food.
Pershing (113), Garland, Texas, USA Sep 29, 2008 clear yellow with a skunky aroma and grainy taste. Small white head that fizzes out quickly. I will never understand why a Brewer would go to all the trouble to make beer and use green bottles for packaging. Green bottles equal skunk aroma since light is able to alter the hops. I use to drink this back in the mid 80’s when there was no other choices. dm9831 (601), Monee, Illinois, USA Sep 25, 2008 clear yellow color, light white head, some lacing. nose of air, hints of grass and grain. flavor is mildly grainy, not very interesting. meidum bodied, slightly dry, bitter finish. pretty unassuming, pretty disappointing. lumpsowers (87), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Sep 23, 2008 Very hoppy, slight skunk in the good green bottled European beer way. Sort of like a more intense Heineken. Best thing about this beer is still probably the label. MrBunn (889), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 20, 2008 Bottle. Body is a clear gold with a pretty good white head. Aromas are a gross mix of skunky hops and poo... they’re really awful. Flavor is much better than my nose would made me guess. Still, nothing great going on here. I kinda expected quite a bit more from St. Pauli Girl since you see it all over the place and I’d guess that means that some people like it. fata2683 (178), APO, New York, USA Sep 15, 2008 Had this on tap in various locations in and around Hamburg. A watered down pilsner that has a skunky finish but lacks body and hops.
