Glouglouburp (2000), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 7, 2008 Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings. ----------------------------------------------------------------
How: Tap at Pivovarsky Klub, Prague
The look: Clear GREEN body with a very small white head.
To me a typical Czech Světlý 12° and above is: Well malted body with plenty of biscuits and cereals. Sweetness level is in the light-medium range with some honey flavours and a light caramel presence (3/4 honey, 1/4 caramel). Fruity flavour limited to a light citrus flavour. Medium carbonation. Finish is dry and moderately bitter with a light citric touch. After-taste of dry grassy/herbal hops with a light dry spiciness character.
This one: Take is boring thin watered version of the above, add a green coloring having a vegetable/pickle side-effect and here you go. Did I mentioned it was green? (Rating #1521) MartinT (4377), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 24, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Subtle nettle (or green food colouring?) and its gassy grassy notes taint this seemingly bland Pilsener base. Thin and harmless, this light green concoction is nothing more than a boring novelty beer to me.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A frail veil of foam sinks into the pale Martian green.
-The spicy, sweet green otherness is redolent of that horrid Japanese cucumber-flavored 7-Up, but it’s not as vile, of course.
-That malty feel is dreadfully anemic and ridden with incessant bubbling.
-There is some hop-like bitterness in the finish which might be a combo of nettle and hops, or just nettle (or green food colouring?).
On tap at Pivovarsky Klub. Quack-Duck (1900), Bodensee, Germany Mar 21, 2008 draught at Pivovarsky Klub. Zelené pivo means "green beer" and is meant to be served at "zeleny ctvrtek" - "green Thursday", the Thursday before Easter. The beer really looks greenish (because of herbs and plant extracts), has a large head and an intensive hoppy nose. Full-bodied, resiny and grassy hops can be detected, with a solid and tasty malty base underneath.
