After seeing Star Hill at some festivals, and having once lived in Charlottesville, I looked forward to trying some Starr Hill beer during a recent visit to C-ville. Unfortunately, I didn’t find this brewer to be well-distributed in the off-premise, and this was the only Starr Hill beer I brought home...and it wasn’t great.
This beer pours black and thin, with a light but abundant head. Aroma is roasty and dry, appropriate for a dry stout I guess, but not tremendously interesting. Flavor was a little thin, and was primarily mild. Flavor was all dry roastiness, like a cold charred cigar. But, not greatly pleasant nor complex. Just a mild char flavor, which didn’t really keep me interested. Mouthfeel was a little thin.
This beer was just OK. I bought it at Wine Warehouse in C-ville.

Dec 26, 2009 Bottle. Poured black in color with a very light brown head that was fully diminishing with fair lacing. The aroma was very, very mild with a slight hint of chocolate and coffee malts and a tinge of toffee.It tasted bitter-sweet with a nice hoppy finish that lasted only a short while. Mourthfeel was light to medium bodied with a watery feel to it. Overall not much to offer but tastes OK.

Dec 21, 2009 Strong malt aroma, thick head, strong black bodied stout. Crisp, sharp Irish style Stout low in alcohol, high in flavor.

Dec 17, 2009 On tap at Oldsmar Tap House (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark cola brown to black with thin tan head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of roast, caramel, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of chocolate, roast, coffee, smoke, some hints of caramel and toffee. Medium body with a malty finish.

Dec 16, 2009 (Draught) Pours an opaque black body with a medium tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, lactose, and coffee. Flavor of roasted malt, coffee, earth, and baking chocolate with a thin mouthfeel and somewhat dry finish.

aroma roasted malts, hints of lactose/coffee, and smoked malts.
flavor, roasted malts, dry palate with hints of chocolate malts and possible smoke adding some char element.
Starts of nice but midway it yields to a bad burnt mouthfeel.

Dec 2, 2009 nice earthy aroma with a touch of soap. flavors of earth, nut and cocoa that are not at all substantial with a hint of soapy hop. touch of licorice with a bitter finish. just a hint of smoke.good training stout.
