Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. With Vertical Epic 03/03/03, we used some pretty interesting ingredients...coriander (a "Belgian-style" beer favorite!), alligator pepper (wow, bite into these little gems and you get a bigtime spicy rush of flavor), and a bit of both unmalted wheat and dark roasted wheat. And a blend of Belgian yeast and American ale yeast. And a nice selection of high alpha hops (a decidedly non-Belgian style twist). All told it makes for a dubble-ish taken-to-San-Diego-pushed-to-the-edge-and-slapped-around-a-bit beer. So, treat it gently. It's been abused enough already. Store it upright, cool and in the dark. It would enjoy a nice long rest. It will have plenty of patience. Now let's see about you . . . . In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/030303

Bomber - thanks to TAR. Enjoyed with a nice firm Manchego cheese and a soft goat cheese. Chestnut brown with small diminishing head (when pouring the second glass I splashed around a bit, and got a nice tan head). Strong aroma of raisins and apple cellar with some hops. Flavor is absolutely delicious with brown sugar, rotten fruit and citrussy hops. Sweet but wellbalanced, but a bit metallic in the aftertaste. This has hold very well again times tooth. Sticky mouth feel with low carbonation, which is nice compared to the, often too lively, Belgian ales.

Sampled at the monthly meeting of the Champaign-Urbana Beer Club courtesy of Andy (Landseer). I can’t but be a little bit disappointed with this one, as I was expecting great things, and it turned out to be a solid Belgian Strong Ale, but nothing to rave about. Some notes of cherry and apple and caramel nut on the nose. The palate is rather thin, and there’s some orange peel and Belgian funk there, but the thinness is bothersome. This is ageing well and should last some time, maybe not until 2012 though. A fun experience, but not overwhelming.

Bottle. Brown color with an off-white head. Nice sweet body with a nice and balanced bitter note. Not bad.

Huge thanks to elnadeau for breaking out this beauty on our pilot homebrew session. A very nice well rounded and complex belgian beauty with excellent balance. Hops are subdued (especially for stone), mouthfeel is pleasant with enough carbonation to yield a bit of bite to the tongue. An elegant beer.

Smells very nice. This tastes like a double but with less alcohol (which is not true). It also seems rather light for the perceived and actual styles. The peppery bite they claim is not really that noticeable. While smooth, I fear that this may be losing it crispness and flavor, which may not be good for the one I’m saving til 2012.

Tasting as of Halloween 2005. Aged in the cellar. The smoothest brew in the world. Ages exceptionally well. Not as hoppy as it once was, but the smoothness is so succinct that the overall effect is pleasing.

22 oz. bottle shared with jerc. Hazy, fizzy mahogony colour with a mostly diminishing frothy tan head. Toffee, raisin, pine, citrus, and lightly hot alcohol aroma. Caramel, raisin, and citurs flavours. Seems most of the spice has mellowed or disappeared, save a light peppery finish. Full bodied, dry and lightly fizzy mouthfeel. Thanks, Jer (and Crockett).

Bottle. Dark hazy amber with a small khaki head. Sweet malt with plenty of hot alcohol and hops present, hint of brown sugar? Warming in the throat, sweet malt and vague caramel dominate. Odd notes of spice and bitterness in the finish are tough to separate from the boozey sensation. Spices seem to have faded, leaving only a touch that lingers in the aftertaste, muted pepper. Medium palate. Seems somehow better when we return to it later. Perhaps the warming changed it? Bottle courtesy of Crockett @ RBSG 05.
