Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. With Vertical Epic 03/03/03, we used some pretty interesting ingredients...coriander (a "Belgian-style" beer favorite!), alligator pepper (wow, bite into these little gems and you get a bigtime spicy rush of flavor), and a bit of both unmalted wheat and dark roasted wheat. And a blend of Belgian yeast and American ale yeast. And a nice selection of high alpha hops (a decidedly non-Belgian style twist). All told it makes for a dubble-ish taken-to-San-Diego-pushed-to-the-edge-and-slapped-around-a-bit beer. So, treat it gently. It's been abused enough already. Store it upright, cool and in the dark. It would enjoy a nice long rest. It will have plenty of patience. Now let's see about you . . . . In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/030303

On tap at the Belgian Beerfest. Brown with an off-white head. Aroma of spiced chocolate cake. Sweet, but not overly so, I tasted lots of chocolate in this, roasted malts. Maybe this mellowed a bit in the year and a half, because this is not quite as in-your-face as other Stone brews. A dubbel to make you start liking dubbels.

Pours reddish with some apricot and butterscotch in the aroma. The flavor is caramel malt with some cinnamon and orange. The style seems somewhere between a brown ale and a dopplebock, not really exerting any Belgian yeast. Finish is thick and heavy, but not imporved with the high-alpha hops.

Cloudy caramel brown color with smallish off white head. Bright caramel upfront in the aroma, with subtle candi sugar, a faint lambic-like sourness, cherries. Flavor is smooth, definite caramel, relatively sweet, subtle alcohol. A nice brew, not very much belgain-ness in this, but it’s good.

Very nice. I guess my sample is about 18 months old now nad it has held up well. Minimal head. Lots of spice in the palate. Very "full" feeling on the tongue. The aocohol has not diminished though in one year. My head will hurt tomorrow- but don’t cry for me. I will survive.
