Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. With Vertical Epic 03/03/03, we used some pretty interesting ingredients...coriander (a "Belgian-style" beer favorite!), alligator pepper (wow, bite into these little gems and you get a bigtime spicy rush of flavor), and a bit of both unmalted wheat and dark roasted wheat. And a blend of Belgian yeast and American ale yeast. And a nice selection of high alpha hops (a decidedly non-Belgian style twist). All told it makes for a dubble-ish taken-to-San-Diego-pushed-to-the-edge-and-slapped-around-a-bit beer. So, treat it gently. It's been abused enough already. Store it upright, cool and in the dark. It would enjoy a nice long rest. It will have plenty of patience. Now let's see about you . . . . In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/030303

In the aroma I get intense ripe fruits - banana, plum, apple - followed by mild phenolics - clove and band-aids. There is also some malt and yeast earthiness and spiciness. Clear ruby-amber in color, beige head is milkshake-like and leaves good lacing. Flavor is malty and spicy, with some peppery alcohol and moderate hop bitterness coming through in the finish. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, hides the alcohol well. I had this beer last year, just after it came out, and didn't like it. I thought it had way too much hop flavor for a Belgian-style ale. Well the hop flavor has dropped out, leaving a superbly balanced Belgian. It has all the spiciness and fruitiness that a Belgian should, but with an even balance from the Stone-quantity of hops added. Amazing what a year will do for a beer.

Sampled 03.03.04 Poured a dark hazy amber with minimal head and nice lacing. Definite candi sugar and dried, dark fruits on the nose. Some caramel can be detected as well. Tastes sweet with strong fruity notes. The hoppy bitterness comes through about midway and proves to be exceptionally balancing. The finish may be what I like best, it's dry, slightly sweet, and clean. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Drinkability is hurt by apparent alcohol, though slight, and is helped by the excellent finish.

Nice pour. Caramel color with a slim lingering head. Caramel, some chocolate, and a hint of brown sugar in the aroma. Smooth taste that leaves you with a dry feeling. Kind of sweet. Some spice and malt as well. A pretty good brew from Stone! Different, but good.

22 oz bottle, snifter. Candi sugar, caramel, plum, brown sugar, chocolate and corriander aromas. Deep red-brown body with many yeasties and a beautiful tan head. [takes a sip] Whoa, a little heavy on the spices! Moderately sweet flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly bitter finish. Medium-heavy body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. The bottom line is: doesn't quite sit right with me.

I love all Stone brews, and this is no exception. Beautiful pour, and that sweet fruity/sweet/spicy aroma that wafts from the glass made my mouth water. Can't wait to see what it tastes like on 12/12/12

Poured a hazy copper color with a small head. Hoppy aroma, also included hints of dough, yeast, malt, plums, and alcohol. Taste of tobacco, yeast and dough, some citrus, and also finished with caramel, and the pepper still had a small bite, even after a year or so.

Brown/deep amber color. Coriander is very prominent with hints of pepper. Strong malt backbone with a brandy-like alcohol finish. Too spiced for my tastes.
