Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

Had in a vertical tasting with the 030303 and 050505. This was more vinous than the 3. Again bready was an adjective that came to mind. Golden, honey haze color, a good bit lighter than the 3, and without the ruby tone. Mildly carbonated.

Bottle. Poured a dark amber with a medium white head. Good complex aroma of malt and citrus. Medium body. Very good flavor of malt and citrus with a long balanced finish. As good or better then 2005.

Aroma is very sweet, though not unpleasantly so. Yeasty overtones in the odor. Golden yellow coloring, with hints of amber. Very carbonated, and a small off-white head. Very dry flavor. Starts out slightly biting, and then goes into a very dry spot. Very yeasty finish, and the mouthfeel is light, but still substantial. Overall, a different kind of Belgian/Strong, which is kind of the point. Makes me want to track down the others. Another winner from Stone.

Light golden yellow pour with a thin layer of creamy head. Aroma was quite complex, with some floral notes, bananas, dough, and wheat. Very nice hefe-twist to a Belgian strong! The banana came through with a wheaty backbone. Lime was also lightly present in the flavor. You don’t usually find these alongside the Belgian yeast. Finish was somewhat dry, and carried through some yeasty bananas. This has mellowed out since the release, and certainly for the better!

(on bottle) Had this baby a bit too warm, so...Dark, clear redish-brown, with a small beige head. Sent of fried bananas and a light molasses. Has more burn, mocca, notes in flavour, big sweetness and got cloying in the end. A bit of a alcoholic finish.

Yeasty doughy aroma of bread. Little hazy Yellow color body. Head was good on the pour. Small head stayed with the beer till 3/4 way through then a thin layer settled on top of beer. Good amout of lacing on glass. Flavor had an acidic citrus bite at first. Half way through the lime flavor was good and tasty and the acidic bite was gone. Good beer 14 months later.

Thanks to Argo0. Floral, hoppy aroma. To me the appearance was disappointing, but that’s just because I like my beers darker or cloudier in general. Copper color with a slightly off white head that didn’t last very long. The flavor is good, a touch sweet (the Belgian yeast is apparent) from the yeast and the malts. The mouthfeel is smoother than one would expect for the amount of alcohol - but a bit sticky. This might go down too quickly... The aftertaste has some apple in it. I agree with other raters that this beer will get better with age.

Thanks to Foolish Mortal for the bottle. This beer tastes exactly as once should expect it to - immature. I’m sure it will age nicely for the next 7 years, when I’ll probably try it again. The head was off-white and produced little lacing. The beer was hazy and looked like a Golden Ale in colour. There is a citrus scent (lime) to the beer, and a taste of ginger. It was astringent (high alcohol, tannins?) with a long, acidic finish. If you’ve got a bottle, hang onto it for a while longer.
