Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

Murky golden orange, yeast is powerful in the nose along with big bananas and apricots, and even some coconut and sweet bready apples. Bright and sweet apples and cake flavors, really too sweet but very nice.

Clear golden color, almost no head, sweet banana and clove dominate the aroma. The banana and clove spice are quite prominent, the mouthfeel is sweet and a bit syrupy. For me the finish had a bit of a tinny, lingering bite that will hopefully diminish as the other bottle I am aging for next year matures.

hazy light to medium golden, no head. aroma is heavily spiced, with floral notes and even wheat and leather. flavor is loaded with the sharp spices and wheat...mild notes of banana and yeast. alcohol is superbly hidden. the hay quality mentioned by dickinsonbeer is absolutely evident in the aroma and the flavor. so much better than the ’03. pretty acidic with hay/lemon in the finish.

Light colored with Ok head and head retention, with some lace. Aroma is spicy and light-medium phenolic. Some banana as it warms. Some hay, horseblanket, and must all the way through. FLavor is complex, with lots of sweet malt some hops, and spices. Has a tart finish (maybe from the lime leaf) which makes it quite refreshing. Very good, but I think the 03 might be a little more complex. 04 is great for summer drinking and 03 for winter drinking IMO.

Bottle. Medium sized white head that poured smooth with small-medium sized bubbles that mostly diminished. Malty, hoppy, sweet, spicy, and clove aroma. Flavor was lightly acidic, lightly bitter, somewhat tart, and alcohol. Medium bodied with sparse lacing.

Pours a two-fingered white head, fades quickly to a ring and leaves no lace. Clear amber color. Nose is alcohol. Alcohol is right there at the start along with some sweetness, alcohol finish. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Totally different from last year’s 03.03.03. $8.00 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

This is a really good Belgian Strong Ale. Sweet malt, earthy, and some hoppy flavors. Finishes crisp, clean, and dry.

This is a great belgian. Definitely smell the banana esters on the nose. This beer smells, tastes really FRESH, its got a little bit of that homebrew freshness to it. Sweet but not too sweet like some belgians can be. Nice full mouth feel. Very well balanced. I was suprised when I noticed the high alcohol content on the side of the bottle, it is not apparent at all while drinking it.
