Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

22oz bottle, thanks to crosling for hooking this up. aged almost 3 years now. i decided to do what this bottle suggests and pick up some thai to pair it with. i’d probably do what ever Stone tells and especially if Thai food is involved. pours clear golden with white head. nose is sorta musty, lemon grass, mint, banana, lots of sweet lime, and subtle funky yeast in the background. very perfumy nose. flavor has a soft lime, banana, and sorta buttery. finish is pretty sweet too. i’d prefer this more if it was funkier, drier, and more saison like. it did pair well with the thai food but not as well as a good saison would have. in the end, i think this beer realizes to heavily on the lime leaf and didn’t get complexity from the yeast..

A golden yellow pour with no head, this one had a grainy banana flavor with lots of hops. Not as enjoyable as the 03.

Cloudy fully golden colour with a fast disappearing off white head. Malty, sweet aroma with toffee notes and hints of fruit and wood. Malty, caramel sweet flavor with a light fruity and alcohol note. Dry, toffee sweet finish.

(Bottle 65 cl) Slightly hazy amber golden with a small, off-white head. Aroma of fruit and aroma hops. Fairly full-bodied with some caramel, lightly perfumy hop accents and a bitter, hoppy finish. Decent but far from outstanding. Courtesy of Storm. 120207

Golden colored pour. Nose is banana, honey, and very perfumy. It works okay though. A little more hoppy than the ’03. Unique take on a belgian. I don’t recall tasting one quite like this before.

Bottle, thanks to Storm for sharing. Hazy amber coloured with a white head. Aroma of malts, fruits, caramel and hops. Sweet flavour of fruits, caramel, hops and pine needles.

Lightly hopped. Sweet malt balanced by a tripel-like fruitniness. Cloudy orange color. Hops are considerable for the style.

Not as enjoyable as the 03 by any means. Similiar color, but the nose is very perfumy, like that of a grandmas bathroom. Very sweet flavor, but a little bit watery on the mouthfeel. The beer has a tripel like sweetness that fit it, but the hop balance is not really there. I am overly hard on this beer due to the anticipation of trying it, and although the 03 was better, it still was very nice.
