Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Bottle from Whole Foods, San Diego - shared with tupalev, jerc & HogTownHarry. Dark brown with a moderately sized tan head. Nice aroma - dark grapes, yeast, burnt sugar, spice and a bit of alcohol. Flavour - an unexpected bit of coffee off the top, followed by some spiciness (nutmeg?), licorice, some roast and smoke. Interesting, and a nice way to start another of our fantastic tasting sessions.

The aroma is at first very malty, but then aromas of roasted malt, spice, fruit, and hops come through. Flavor is a mixture of chocolate, spice, dark fruit, and a touch of earthiness. The color is a dark brown with reddish hues.

This beer offers a healthy aroma consisting of dates, molasses, raisins, and barley. It is a rich mahogany colored solution that only has a smidgen of a cashew colored head. This moderately thick beer is very sweet and rich. The flavor is an infusion of caramel, dates, molasses, almonds, and wheat. A nice sweet date flavor is left lingering on the palate.

Bottle shared with GregClow, Jerc, Hogtown Harry, and Blankboy, Greg’s bottle. Nice sweet malty aroma with a little spiciness. And what I like to call "Belgian Booze". Decent sweet alcohol taste. Actually, this thing becomes way too damn sweet. And the alcohol kicks in as well. What started out as (wow, am I about to sing an REO Speedwagon lyric?...no) a nice Belgian Strong has turned into a sweet boozy monster. Tick and syrupy, slightly bitter finish, with even a little roast/smoke in the finish. This just became way too unbalanced for me.

Pours a dark brown, with an amber hue. A thick rocky head, that eventually thins out to a sheet, but leaving the glass still frothy. Extremely malty palate, thick mouthfeel, very smooth. Aroma is floral with a chocolate, and even roasty scents all mixed together, strangely. Flavor is difficult to dissect. Chocolates, lingering hop spice. In the end, it leaves you feeling warm in the chest, and throat, and the high alcohol content is balanced nicely throughout. A very enjoyable brew and, very impressive. Just another great brew from the boys at Stone.

Bottle. Dark brown body with a small creamy tan head (3+) Sweet sugary malt, mild Belgian-alcohol grows proportionate to the time your nose spends in the glass. Flavour has an intense introduction with a sweet middle, and dry bitter finish that lingers. Interesting mix of flavours are tough to decipher. Medium palate (3+). Nice but lacks transcendance.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jer and tupalev - GregClow’s bottle. Deep clear brown-mahogany with a small tan head. Mild aroma of yeasty malt and spices, a hint of milkiness. Tastes of oaky alcohol, rich roast (almost burnt) malt, and bitter spices. Mouthfeel is lively, sticky and alcoholic, with a hint of bottle metal on warming - this is very strong and very sweet, with a bitter spicy finish - reminded me of chewing on cinnamon sticks when I was a kid; seemed more of an ASA than a Belgian strong though.
