Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Pours a dark molasses brown with mahagony hints and a medium diminishing frothy tan head which becomes a rocky film with lined lacing. Heavy malt (hay) wheat and yeast aroma, moderately roasted caramel nutty malt with cellared (cobwebs) notes. Medium bitter acidic hop and moderately roasted nutty malt and alcohol flavor with a hoppy finish. Medium and thick bodied fizzy and slightly dry palate.

Pours a reddish brown color with a thin light brown head. Aroma of earth, caramel and mild peated malt. Very good flavor of of earth, caramel, peated malt, there might be a yeasty thing going on there too, it finishes bitter. The body is light with a creamy texture and soft carbonation.

Dark ruby, reminiscent of a port, but with a clingy brownish head.
Caramel, scotch ale sweet, but with a twist of mirabelle (some weird fruit they use to make booze in europe), some plums and a nice alcohol finish.
Profound maltyness, like a granola bar with nothing but specialty malts and caramel/nougat, dipped in a bit of alcohol to round it all off and make it rich and warming.

Bottle shipped straight from the source as reward for the homebrew contest. Ebony mahogany with crimson hues shining through the edge of my brand new Stone pint glass. During the pour I notice how fizzy it is but the head doesn’t grow too out of control and remains managable throughout the rest of the glass; the lacing isn’t bad either. The nose is full of plumy esters and spicy malts. Almost like the smoky plum flavor you get off of belgian special B. The flavor is nice and creamy, a bit of a bite and the characteristic stone hop bite in the tail. The finish is a bit intense, I could use a bit less edge or this could use a bit more aging. Very mildly roasty belgian strong ale with some classic esters and an american twist. Drank this during a homebrew imperial stout brew session while listening to Cock Sparrer.

Red/brown pour, with a tan head. Aromas of malt, yeast, dark fruit, brown sugar and spice. Flavors are brown sugar, malt fruit, hops, and a rather large amount of spices. I’d like to try this again in a year or two to see how it ages.

I didn’t have the patience to wait until 12/12/12...I had to snarf this one last night. To my credit, it has sat in my fridge for almost 60 days, so that’s something I guess. Nose of caramel, butterscotch, pecan pie, rum, and berries. Pours a cloudy cola with ruby highlights. The head and lacing can only be described as pathetic. The brew has an overpowering start of huge chocolatey malt. The warm alcoholic middle has low acidity. The long full bitter finish is very satisfying. Nice complexity, almost perfect balance. The full body is dry and lively with a finish that feels astringent.
