Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

22 oz bottle: Chestnut brown body w/ a short lived light brown head, lightly hazy. Clove spice aroma up front like a hefe weizen w/a medium light banana ester and roast aroma; Hints of plum from yeast and solventy alcohol once it warms. Lightly floral hop. Malt is a little non distinct, but lightly toasty. The flavor is sort of like a chocolate covered banana on the first impression. Well balanced slightly to malt w/ hints of plum and sugary sweetness. Some toasty malt; The finish is a bit sweet, maybe just a bit too sweet, but not cloying. Aftertaste is sweet, sugary, and lingering w/ hints of roastiness. Medium body and carbonation w/ a well hidden alcohol in the mouth; smooth. The first impression was pretty roasty, chocolatey, and unbalanced, but the second impression leaves me as not really being a belgian. More dunkelweizen like in character than Belgian. Maybe some aging will help it out?

22 oz bottle. Thanks fly! It is a reddish/brown color with a nice head. The aroma has raisins, caramel and sweetness. The flavor is winey, sweet, raisiny, some roastiness, and yeasty. Nice combo. Should be interesting in 6 months. Great beer now anyway.

Thanks Santa! Pours a dark amber, small off-white head. Aroma of metal, spices, cinnamon, taragon?, nutmeg. Flavor is more spices, with a nice balance between spice/malt/hops. Alcohol is very subtle.

Bottle. Dark brown with a thick foamy head that fades into a bubble film. Notes of cedar, molasses, fig, sawdust. Sweet.

Sampled from a bomber per Matt. Pours to a thin beige head that disapates within 20 seconds to a thin, non-existent like head. The body is a dark mahogany. The aroma has a gingerbread quality to it. It also has a ton of spice in it. Cinnamon, mace, apples, nutmeg. The flavor is quite spicy. Dark fruits. Lots of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Bottle shared by Facto. Clear brown body with a thin tan ring of bubbles. Alcoholic bubblegum and windmill cookie aroma. Nicely spiced flavor - chocolate, nutmeg, custard finishing wiht bitter chocolate. The beer’s flavor isn’t really "big" but the components blend together very well.

Rock on Stone! Burnt orangey crimson, thin tan fizzy head. The nose was rich and complex with notes of plum, cloves, cocoa, dark sweet bread, and rum raisin, with lighter tones of citrus. Extremely well balanced flavors throughout with spiced dark fruit, rich caramel malt, and light notes of mochachino. In the end, you finally get some of the typical Stone hoppiness, yet it only plays a supporting role this time around. Medium bodied, prickly carbonation, dry, bittersweet finish. Kick ass man! Again I beg of you (Chris, Greg, whomever) to get Stone in Maryland ASAP...

Couldn’t find the phenols nor esthers for anything, but it was set right by an excellent body and superior malt bill and complimentary hops. Was graced by another bottle which I will save for further examination at a later date.
