Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

22oz bottle, courtesy of wetherel for no good reason. Thanks, John!! Pours a murky, dark cherry-cola color; light tan head with great lacing. Dried dark fruits and cola in the aroma; slightly boozy with some brown sugar. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: spritzy carbonation at the front of the tongue, followed by warm cola and brown sugar notes; solid chewy malt presence with minimal oxidation; dried dark fruits (blackberries, currants) appear at mid-palate. Slightly hot, but nothing significant. Lengthy, cola and dried fruit finish; just a touch of dry caramel.

Bottle: Pours a clear ruby with a thin off-white head, big aroma with cherries, rich spices, grapefruit and caramel. Starts and ends bitter, with a long sweet ending and warming alcohol, full bodied with a slick mouthfeel and strong carbonation, amazingly complex.

Pours a deep, rich, amber color that shows ruby highlights when held up to the light. It is topped by a frothy light brown to amber colored head that dissapears after a couple of minutes. As I pour this beer I get a definite note of cloves. As I go in deeper I get notes of concentrated plum, raisins, figs, chocolate and alcohol. The taste is sweet and fruity up front, but then moves to a spicy slightly harsh note in the finish. The rich fruitiness is quite good and reminds me of raisins, and figs. The finish is astringent with notes of higher alcohols, spicy notes of pepper and clove, and hints of roasted malt and chocolate.

I will say this, this is the first one of these that I actually see lasting a couple of years, it is still a bit young and harsh around the edges. This should be quite nice once the harsh notes in the finish mellow out and the fruitiness comes to the fore.

September 2006- wonderful dark brown color with a little head on top. Dark plums, chocoalte and malt in the taste and nose- very intense. Alcoholic finish- but pleasant. Wonderful

Dark brown body glints ruby at its center. Large yellowish tan head lasts for a while. The aroma has a slightly sourish aspect. The fruitiness mixed with the phenols kind of reminds me of a refrigerator crisper in need of dumping. With the anise and nutmeg spicing the aroma is just a jumbled mess. The flavor improves with a good brown sugar maltiness and a bit of apple peel and most of the less desirable aspects of the aroma falling out. Still, it falls flat with an incongruous metallic bitterness that kind of ruins the effect.

Poured a amber-brown color with some red edges. The head was somewhat disappointing, but the lacing decent. Aroma was spicey (not added though?) and yeasty (enjoyable). The flavor was spicey, and dark fruit-like with the yeast coming through pretty strong (pretty much like a dubel). The aftertaste was bready and yeasty (slightly bitter from the latter). Enjoyable, but perhaps better if aged.

Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a huge foamy dirty beige head with average retention. Aroma is quite hoppy which was kind of surprising for a Belgian Ale but then again I’m starting to get use to different with beers from Stone. Taste is a mix between roasted malt, caramel with a big heavy dose of citrus hops at the end that IMHO don’t mix very well with this beer. Body is above average and alcohol is not discernable. Overall, I guess I have a hard time with the heavy dose of hops in a Belgian Ale which is why this is not something I will seek in the future.

Pours with a burgundy body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet with dark fermented fruit notes, a touch of cinamon and other spices, as well as, a slight yeastiness. Medium bodied, smooth and dry.
