Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

ON tap at Stone Winter Storm. Hazy golden with a creamy white head. Sweet fruit and malty aroma. Caramel, orange, and tropical fruit taste with a clean finish.

22oz bottle. thanks to crosling for this. had it right after it’s release but didn’t rate it. i recall not thinking much of it so with almost 2 years of age...pours a dense mahogony (a touch on the dark side) with tan head. nose has really nice toffee and rum raisons, plums, light touch of yeast too. flavor has a nice combination of chocolate, caramel, and toasted cookie, some plums and yeast in the undertones. mouthfeel is rich and pretty creamy. alcohol is well hidden. finishes a tad too earthy but long, dry, and smooth. i liked this a lot more with 2 years on it than i did fresh.

I like this beer. It’s very different for Stone. It reminds me of a toned down Flemish Sour ale, w/ other added flavors. Dark reddish brown, with nose & flavors of sour cherries, the head was a nice off brown. There are some complexities in the flavor that I bet will come out w/ age.

Bottle at O’Briens. Couldn’t resist the chance to buy one of these; split with golubj. Poured a dark reddish-brown. Aroma was very malty; raisins, smoke, dark fruit, brown sugar, and chocolate. Flavor was a malt extravaganza; really good tasting. I’m not sure how much time that it has left, but right now it was really tasty.

Bottled: Slightly sticky texture. Somewhat a bit too thin and sweet. Hops and some yeast are present in the finish. An average strong ale.

Bottle. Dark brown color with a foamy light brown head. Strong ginger and spicy aroma and flavor. Rich and malty with a strong alcohol presence. Finishes with a lingering dry, spicey, pepper flavor.

Dark ruby color, bright at sides, with a long-lasting, creamy tan head. Nice. in the nose: ah...warm, soft, fruity, rich, malty, toffeeish, enticing...delicious...alive and invigorating...much appreciated. ...and smooth and tasty on the tongue, as well. Big, fat malty taste, nary a squeak out of hops...molasses, hint of anise, caramel...richness at play on the palate. Damnably tasty! And the high abv keeps quiet, at least, so far... I’d love it if this were a regular brew, that I could down anytime I felt. It straddles a special place between abbey dubbel and baltic porter, with a kiss of coffee/chocolate/oatmeal/nut brown stout...if you know what I mean...yummy!
