Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

22 oz. bottle from Mr. Liquor. Poured deep ruby with a decent tan head that lasted for most of the glass. Lacing throughout. Aromas of spice and dark fruit, caramel and roasted malt. Flavors were similar with alcohol worked in as well. Maybe a bit too carbonated, but I am sure that will mellow out by the time this is actually supposed to be consumed. A sweet and hoppy finish. I am looking forward to trying it again in a few years.

Bottle. Pours dark mahogany with thin beige head. The aroma is raisins, brown sugar, and passionfruit. The flavor has a ton of caramel, raisins, sugar, and a woody finish. Drinking more brings out an earthy overtone and some alcohol. Not bad, not bad.

Nice opulent mahogany color with some web cast tan markings for the head. Plums and prunes come out in the aroma as if they’ve been basking in wood lacquered bowls in a mixture of honey water, cinnamon and nutmeg. Whomph! Flavor rolls in with plump raisins and a heavy cinnamon and brown sugar marinade. Something about this reminds me of morning surprise bran muffins or Raisin Bran itself. Unique and quite tasty, all thanks to JPDIPSO for sharing another winner!

Clear brownish red body with a large head. Aroma is caramel, chocolate, brown sugar, Belgian yeast, hint of raisins. Flavor is the same. While it’s pretty tasty, it needs refinement. It almost has a fake Belgian taste or something. Like half Stone, half Belgian. Hard to explain..

Bottle: poured cola brown with a medium tan head. Mild spicy aroma-cinnamon. Flavor is light for Stone. No big hop flavor but this is a Belgian afterall. Moderate yeasty taste with hints of fruit-banana and some dark fruitiness too. Sweet in the finish. Mild carbonation. Good overall and a fine product for Stone’s portfolio.

Bottle from the cellar enjoyed on 09.09.08 mbd. Mahogany pour with a tight tan head. Strong aroma rising from the glass is lightly oxidized with chocolate toffee and pecans. Medium body. Rich, hearty flavors mirror aroma; again cocoa, toffee sweetness with roasty nutty pecan flavors. Has a mild burnt malt bitterness to finish. Seems the oxidation in this bottle added another ( nice ) layer of depth here. Enjoyed this much more this time than when fresh back in 2005. Wish i had more of these. Most worthy

Bottle. lighter cola colored pour. Medium roasted malt aroma. Tastes past its prime. Choclate malts, malted milk balls, sweet malts. kind of disappointing after waiting this long

dark brown with a red tint, it is almost black with a huge grey brown head. sweet molasses nose, this smell reminds me of a quad with spicy alcohol and dark fruits. taste is strong malt and sugar, wow, like a belgian barleywine, should be better in a few years when this sucker mellows. nice chocoloate, plum, biscuit, buttery finish.
