Roasted malt nose, becoming more complex as it warms, when a distinct dark fruityness comes to the fore, lightly spiced with clove. Flavor is big! Bready, malty, spicy, but with a rough edge. Hops are apparent. Obviously will benefit greatly from aging, as I expect all the flavors to soften and merge. This is going to be a winner in 2012, but is great right now, too! I’m buying a few to sample over the next six years, just to follow the maturation process. ucusty (1908), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 27, 2005 I was hoping this would have some kind of cinco de mayo spin, but it didn’t. The beer is darker then I rememer 03 and 04 being. More of a ruby color with a nice cream colored head. Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and alcohol with the aroma, dry cocoa also. Taste is rather bland with a backbone of cinnamon, and other spices with a slight alcohol taste at the end. Actually pretty dissapointing, but neverless a decent brew. jeffc666 (1895), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 12, 2005 Nice looking beer. Clear mahogany with a dense tan head. The aroma is quite spicy, hints of Juicy Fruit chewing gum with some light dark fruit that is reminiscent of a dubbel. The flavor is quite salty, full of sweet malts, the spice is still here, and a decent hop bite in the middle. It really tastes like a lighter barley wine mixed with a dubbel and then mixed with an Anchor Our Special Ale. The palate is medium, lightly assertive, dry alcoholic finish. Interesting for sure. Seems much more American styled than Belgian styled. I find it rather enjoyable in the end. BeerLimey (1873), California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 25, 2005 Deep reddish brown appearance, thick creamy head formation. Caramel aroma, mildly chocolaty and fruity. Smooth and chocolaty on the plalate, rich creamy fruitiness, warming alcohol finish and elevated hoppiness for the style. Nice flavor, good little complexities, but just lacks a little in the usual Stone boldness. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA

Smells of sweet fruits, caramel, and dark malts. Tastes slightly bitter sweet, very malty, berries, raspberries, and just a touch some caramel in the finish. Leaves a nice sweet taste in the aftertaste, nice on the palate. A little yeasty, nice flavor. I like the sweetness and fruitiness to it. Crosling (1855), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 24, 2005 Deep burgundy color with a gigantic, creamy and rocky head of foam. This looks like a Belgian for sure. Aromatically speaking, it’s a bit dusty and dull, but still bursting with character with hints of sugared plums, pumpkin, chocolate, raspberries, almonds, bubble gum and toffee. Flavor is interesting, as each sip is different, some reassuring, some disappointing. The flavor is full of alcohol, but not harsh, loaded with notes of roast, chocolate, coffee, toffee and bright red fruit, with various yeast attributes. I don’t know a lot about Belgian yeast, but the yeast used in this just seems a little strange to me. Palate is noticibly thin compared to most Belgians. I’m pretty impressed overall, but I am sure Stone can do much better, especially if they brewed a Belgian style beer more than every 13 months.
