Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a large fluffy beige head that mostly diminished. Aroma is dominated by sweet molasses maltiness and spicy, dark bready yeasts. The alcohol is subtle but noticible among the dark fruits and other scents. Flavor is best for me when room temp, sweet, fruity and spicy like a mulled hard cider with raisins, prunes and a splash of brandy poured over thick, yeasty bread. Medium to full body and creamy carbonation. I like this one now, but I’m looking forward to experiencing it as it ages and mellows a bit.

Thin brown head of fine bubbles. Reduces slowly to a soapy looking head. Light carbonation. Rich and roasty aroma with molasses, plums and raisins. Little brown sugar also. Quite yummy. Color is a dark crimson brown. Color is darker than I expected. Rich and roasty flavor. Little bit of sweetness. Spicey and yeasty. Actually the sweetness is a little strong and unsettling in the stomach. Lots of sweet syrupy malts with a little bit of alcohol presence. This brew is not flying with me. Little bit of coffee at the finish. Dry and slightly bitter. Strange. Has a weird sweetness with a dry dirt kind of flavor. I don’t know, maybe it is just me.

Salty and barleywine-ish, but dubble-y too. This is a strange brew - all sorts of pepper, salt, malt, very little in the way of hops or fruitiness to me. Lots of metallic flavors (9 volt battery time). Good. Better than the 04 IMO, and should mellow and change nicely (but watch for the creep of the sours...?). Obviously, a bit hot...

Bottle. Dark brown with a thick foamy head that fades into a bubble film. Notes of cedar, molasses, fig, sawdust. Sweet.

Had planned on saving this and trying to get the entire series. As it’s unlikely I’ll live to 12/12/12, may as well drink up. Besides, not all years have been banner ones, so what the hell. This is a clear dark brown with a frothy tan head. Citrus zest, caramel, hints of chocolate, and other, fairly typical Belgian vapors meet the nose. Medium body has lively carbonation. The flavor was fairly common Belgian strong ale along the lines of what one would get from Famtome and the like. Maybe by 12/12/12 it will be better. Damned if I’ll know.

Part of the 02 thru 06 vertical at YourDarkLord’s house. Thanks to Rooftoprogue for bringing this to the table. Pours deep copper brown with a frothy tan head. Much darker than the previous four vertical epics. Lots of esters in the aroma, along with some toastiness and brown sugar. Flavor is mildly sweet, with notes of brown sugar, wheat malt, clove, and molasses. Mildly hot on the finish. This should get better with age.

Finally getting around to rating this from backlog. In a certain sense it’s a good opportunity to take stock of the series by reflecting on my impressions and notes from the past. What I mean is that, with some perspective, I might be tempted to say that this was the last beer in the initial phase of the series, the last somewhat dark beer before Stone seemed to shift to tripel/golden/hybrid beers. It had lovely sweet malts with a hint of spicy yeast and tangy malts, slight wood and autumn fruit. Perhaps one of the most interesting and age-able of the series to this point.

Blind rating, American Beer Tastings at Sk8viking´s. Pours a clear dark cobber with a tanned head. Smells like a barley wine. Sweet with some bitterness especially towards the end. Also notes of nuts and alcohol. Full bodied.
