Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Thanks to my summer santa. Deep ruby brown, medium dark head. Nose is tea, caramel, sweet malt, slight alcohol. Flavor is sweet caramel, tea-like hops, some muddled fruit. A bit of alcohol. Bitterness and some woodiness in the finish.

Bottle. Poured out a nice deep brown color with a hint of ruby showing throught when held up to the light. Fair sized and moderately lived tan head with decent lacing left behind. Aroma is nicely malted with a hint of cocoa showing through. Scant whiffs of some darker fruit such as plum. Medium bodied and very smooth, almost coating mouthfeel. A touch spiced in flavor indeed, just a hint of pepper, some decent chocolate and fruits reside in the flavor. This should age out much better than the ’04 in my opinion.

Dark red/mahogony with a light brown head. Lots of sugary dark fruit aroma. Some hoppy spice, yeasty phenols, and alcohol as well. The flavor starts of with lots of raisins. Stays fruity and roasted all the way to the semi-sweet finish. Fairly full palate. Easy to drink.

Thin head, clear dark crimson. Spicy, malty aroma. Taste is mixed spices with solid hop bitterness. Finish is sweet, estery, slightly dry and bitter. Hints of roastedness. Mouthfeel is nice and round, sticky, better than most Stone beers. Very nice American-Belgian style, very "Stone-ish" and very good.

Bottle shared by Facto. Clear brown body with a thin tan ring of bubbles. Alcoholic bubblegum and windmill cookie aroma. Nicely spiced flavor - chocolate, nutmeg, custard finishing wiht bitter chocolate. The beer’s flavor isn’t really "big" but the components blend together very well.

I had read a few luke warm reviews of this brew shortly after it came out, and therefore perhaps my expectations were low. But boy, does this renew my respect for Greg Koch as a brewer! This is perhaps the best Belgian Strong brew I have ever had, and I didn’t have to travel to Belgium or shop the import aisle to get it. (I did have to travel to California, however) Not a real strong aroma. Belgian yeast notes are evident, however, as is some roasted malt. Dark ruby red body with lots of visible carbonation. Thick consistency visually. Large, tight bubble, tan head. Tart, sour and salty with dark raosted malt flavors. Alcohol profile is subdued making this brew imminently drinkable to the point of being session-like. Wonderful. No flaws.

very complex, cap almost blows off upon opening. pours out dark brown color with a brown head that goes away very slow. aroma is hoppy, malty, spicy, and fruity. there is also a hint of alcohol present. taste is very similar to an alagash brew (must use the same barley, or something). complex, fruity, spicy, and kind of sweet, this is a very good beer. this is my second epic that i have had, and i must say that it is not as good as the one from last year, but it is still good, and actually i would think this one is going to last the 7 years till 12/12/12 more so than the 4/4/4. damn fine beer, as i have come to expect from these guys.

Medium sized light brown cap, large bubbled, good retention with minimal lacing thats spotty. Color is dark brown with a red glow. Good clarity, an attractive brew. Nose of dark fruits, plummy, raisiny with hints of clay, peppery spiceyness and a bit of vanilla. Body is med/full, smooth textured. Dry malt flavors, lightly earthy, dusty. Ripe fruits coming through, cocoa and a light roastiness, bananna and alcohol flavors showing as it warms up. Dry, fruity finish. A keeper that will be interesting to age. Once again, Thanks to SDbruboy for a couple bombers of this fine elixer!! Thanks Cliff!
