| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2005 Deep red brown color, tan head. Pleasant aroma of dark fruit, yeast, spice, and a bit of alcohol. Plummy flavor, yeasty again with a bit of anise and some sweet malt. Body is pretty full, alcohol is present but does not detract, finishes dry. I’m liking this. Well done. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 9, 2005 Dark reddish, brown with a fluffy, brown head. Spicy nose of clove, coriander, all spice, raisins, sweet apples, licorice, cherries, whole grain bread and some candi sugar. Full, smooth body with a chewy mouthfeel and a long, warm finish. The flavors show the spicy character of the yeast, it really is quite impressive. The spice character is intense and multifaceted. There is some nice malt laying underneath the spicy intensity, but most of it is lost. The occasional fruity sweetness comes out from time to time, but in reality, it tends to be lost in the shuffle. The substantial alcohol is quite fitting, giving another layer of spiciness. I’m not a huge fan of the crazy spiciness, but don’t find this unpleasant. I think time, a year maybe, will help make this a little more drinkable as the spices should mellow, allow the malts to further develop. All in all, it’s probably the best of the three Vertical Epics I’ve had so far. GreatLibations (1447), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Jan 19, 2006 Updated: Feb 12, 2007It’s a dark, strong ale that explodes on the palate. Full nectar with flavors of spicey hops and slightly sweetend meaty earth. A well seasoned porterhouse steak in a blender would be an accurate discription of this very hearty brew. Alcohol is well hidden. Well balanced to boot. Like a good woman it left me with nothing to be desired. This is my first in the series so I can’t compare to previous vintages. One of my all time favorites. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recomended. robinvboyer (1442), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada

Really en excellent ale. adrian910ss (1435), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 6, 2007 22 oz bomber. Pours dark brown with a slight red tinge. Tan creamy head that quickly vanishes. Aroma of dark roasted malts, chocolate, sourdough bread and fresh yeast. Taste is of roasted malts, toffee, and dark fruity flavors. Pretty darn good. Let’s see what a few more years in the cellar will make of this. OldGrowth (1433), North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 16, 2005 Bottle, from Bauer wine and spirits. Good nose, sweet and spicy, molasses, clove,raisin/prune. Nice clean dark orangy/brown color, small head that faded quickly. Bittersweet flavors, same as aromas, the clove stands out, with the others right behind it. Medium body, lite oily creamy mouthfeel, bittersweet sour finish. Tasty brew, just enough of the clove thing for my preference. I think the ABV is hidden nicely trying to be patient and let it warm up... iwantalambic (1389), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 31, 2005 22 oz bottle, fresh: thin off tan head quickly dies into a thin ring. Transparent yellow gold edges with a deep, clear mahogany body. Bready yeast aromatics with hints of banana, coconut, rye, and lightly charred toast. Sort of like a blackened triple…Clove phenols wrap the tongue and combine with a dull, yet strangely spicy bit of star anise. The palate is a little young, needs some development in the carbonation – it almost seems hollow…dark roasted malts and a dusty cocoa powder linger at the back of the throat, while an odd piney hop bitterness tingles the side of the mouth. This one seems to fall along the lines of (2) surpassing the usual or ordinary…we’ll see how it develops, but right now may be my least favourite. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 31, 2005 Reddish brown body, thin tan head that clears. Seems like belgian cherry juice with lightly smoked malt. Cherry, raisins, and dark malt. Not bad, but uniquely Stone.
