Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Thanks to some name forgotten RateBeerian for the brew!

Rating # 995
Pours with a dark coco body and a wispy light tan head. The aroma holds bright notes of mocha, coconut, almonds and apples. The palate is marvelous! Creamy & chewy… very velvety and robust… finish is a dry / sweet & spicy combination. The hops have blended nicely into the chocolaty / darkly kilned malts. Some dark pit-fruits and raisins creep in very nicely. I like Stone’s choice for yeast here… it’s not overly fruity and not one that goes tart with the passage of time.
Well Done, Stone! -One of the best Epic’s to date!

poured a nice ruby brown with a filtery mushroom head. nose of different spices of nutmeg and sweet rock candy, vanilla. on the palate up front sweet figs and dark fruit envelop the palate with wooden spices and molasses. slight tobacco feel as well. ends with a bitterness of the hop flower. A slight twist on a barley wine type beer. alcoholic as it warms. good. i think it would be better after it rests for a while. surprised to see no spices were added to this brew

Clear dark ruby brown pur under a small collapsing tan head with no real lacing. Aroma of brown sugar/molasses, dark fruits, and a hint of licorice. Rich and thick mouthfeel with a lingering fullness but without any stickiness. Multiple flavor levels start off with sweet malt notes of caramel and molasses. There is a bit of roastiness, and some earthy flavors, and some alcohol stars to come through as well. Raisins, plums and similar fruit flavors are more in the background. Finally, a bit of spiciness leads to a a finish that is initially a little sour, turning to a light bitterness. I really liked this, and it became more enjoyable as the drink progressed.

Nice brown pour with brown head. Spice, pepper carmalized sugar and alcohol on the nose. Flavor much the same. Just enough hops to know they are there. Really dry on the finish. So far my favorite of the Vertical epic series.

Pours a deep brownish color with a red tint to it. Very thin off-white, brownish head. Not much of a nose to it. A little bit of malt. Tastes sweet. This brew has mellowed substantially. When it first came it out it was too dark of a Belgian for me. Now, its still dark but the sweetness takes over. Its got some toastiness to it. A little fruit as well, bananas maybe? Marshmallows too. Thinnish palate. Still crisp though. Good carbonation. Very drinkable. Tasty to say the least. Watch out for the abv though.

The aroma is at first very malty, but then aromas of roasted malt, spice, fruit, and hops come through. Flavor is a mixture of chocolate, spice, dark fruit, and a touch of earthiness. The color is a dark brown with reddish hues.

Had this a few times, but I figured give it six months or so to age. Pours out a light brown color with a very small head. The aroma is fruity and spicy, with some notes of hop. The taste is well balanced with notes of spice most obvious are clove and brown sugar. Also a few earthy notes reminiciant of a fine cigar. The end is slightly bitter with an obvious alcohol content. Good overall beer...will have it again in 7 years, hahah

22 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a small beige head. The aroma was fruity (mainly dark varieties) with chocolate, brown sugar, and some hops. The flavor is very much the same with some alcohol peeking through. Medium full mouthfeel. This one is in pretty good shape right now.
