Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

22 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a small beige head. The aroma was fruity (mainly dark varieties) with chocolate, brown sugar, and some hops. The flavor is very much the same with some alcohol peeking through. Medium full mouthfeel. This one is in pretty good shape right now.

Very dark body, looks black in the glass. Thin light cream head on top. Aroma is all about some serious dark fruity notes. Fig, grape and plum, yeah, they’re all there too. Spices, they seemed to make it to the party as well, anise and clove making a smaller, but well balanced presence. Alcohol is a bit heavy in the nose as well, masking the yeast and malt some. Flavor is very stone-like, aka, heavy hop handed. Flavor does indeed need some maturing.

bomber courtesy of Saarlander from a trade almost a year ago. what better day to open this than on its second birthday, 05-05-07. pours a very dark brown with a great looking cap of 1/2" tan foam, fading to spotty lacing. aroma is slightly yeasty with some spiced fruit. flavor is fruity, mellow caramel with some peat notes lurking around. palate is rich and smooth. not quite what I was expecting, but still good. thanks Aaron.

22 oz bottle: Chestnut brown body w/ a short lived light brown head, lightly hazy. Clove spice aroma up front like a hefe weizen w/a medium light banana ester and roast aroma; Hints of plum from yeast and solventy alcohol once it warms. Lightly floral hop. Malt is a little non distinct, but lightly toasty. The flavor is sort of like a chocolate covered banana on the first impression. Well balanced slightly to malt w/ hints of plum and sugary sweetness. Some toasty malt; The finish is a bit sweet, maybe just a bit too sweet, but not cloying. Aftertaste is sweet, sugary, and lingering w/ hints of roastiness. Medium body and carbonation w/ a well hidden alcohol in the mouth; smooth. The first impression was pretty roasty, chocolatey, and unbalanced, but the second impression leaves me as not really being a belgian. More dunkelweizen like in character than Belgian. Maybe some aging will help it out?

22 oz bottle (I still have one in waiting). Pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head. Heavy caramel malt aroma, with raisins and other dark fruit in there as well as yeast and some spices. Good flavor. It has a little bit of an aftertaste and lingers in your mouth. Still good. Some serious stuff.

Taster on tap@the Bistro: Mild dark fruit and citrus aroma. Color is dark brown amber with a medium off-white head. Flavor starts with some Belgian spice followed by rich dark fruit and a semi-sweet finish. Medium bodied and creamy with lively carbonation.

this was my first sampling of the ’series’. It’s not readily availible in my area, so it might be the last. BUt it was very smoth with a nice dark caramel color - a very good belgian style beer
