Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Dark brown opaque beer with a thin mocha head. Mild spicy hop nose with good tang. Flavor is a spicy smoky hoppy blend. Texture is light but fluid. Finish is warming but a little tangy.

Poures a reddish brown with a nice sized light tan head that sticks around for a bit and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is spicey sweet. Sweet malts and some dark fruits with brown sugar and vanilla along with a little bit of hops in the background. Flavor is sweet with noticeable alcohol. Dark fruits and sweet malts are evident along with some spices like nutmeg. Hops really aren’t noticeable at any time. Finishes with a little brown sugar and alcohol. A good brew, curious to see what a few years in the cellar will do to its flavor, hopefully it mellows a little bit.

Pours a rich red brown, big tan head with excellent lingering. Complex yeast aromatics, with a dried fruit untertone. Pungent fruit ester nose, delves into a complex pantehon of malt flavors (earthy, sweet and roasty) and esters (clove spicy, dried fruit). Dry finish, with lingering spicy esters. Still fresh enough that the disparate flavor components fight each other a bit, but it will be amazing after some aging.

Dark red beautiful color. Chocolate and caramel stands out and is balanced well with the belgian yeast. Nice off-white head. Excellent lacing. Nice rich and complex beer. Another winner from Stone!

Opaque dark brown, tan head. Chewy molasses, caramel, dark fruits, not sweet though. Finishes on the bitter side.

Bottle courtesy of Shyam. Better than expected. Nose of sweet licorice, roast, raisin, bread crust and chocolate. Color is nearly black. Flavor is very thick and full: raisin dominates, then dark chocolate, bark, roasty malt and subtle Belgian spice. Thick as hell - maybe even a little char.

Dark mahogony color with a large frothy beige head. The aroma burst out with clove, nutmeg, pepper, raisins, prunes, and sweet bread. The flavor delivered much of the same with a definite metalic (not bad!), dry, hoppy bittereness in the aftertaste. The feel was not quite as gassy as I expected (a good thing) with a very dry finish. Nice. I might like this one best so far.

5/28/05: Bottle.
Black-brown body with an off-white head. Aroma of vanilla, alcohol, molasses, and plum. Malt flavor, slightly sweet and sour with a black cherry finish. Flat. In my opinion the best Vertical Epic thus far.
