Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Bottle. Pours a clear bubbly dark ruby-brown with a small lasting off-white head. Sweet malty aroma with dark fruit, vanilla, brown sugar, spices, yeast and alcohol. Flavour’s also quite sweet and a little boozy with some mild oak, spices and a bitter finish. Needs more hops in my opinion and it’s a bit unbalanced. I’m not crazy about the aftertaste either. Medium to full bodied. This is decent but it’s hard to drink a whole bomber of this on my own, it’s pretty sweet. Not one of my favourite Stone beers.

Pours a dark molasses brown with mahagony hints and a medium diminishing frothy tan head which becomes a rocky film with lined lacing. Heavy malt (hay) wheat and yeast aroma, moderately roasted caramel nutty malt with cellared (cobwebs) notes. Medium bitter acidic hop and moderately roasted nutty malt and alcohol flavor with a hoppy finish. Medium and thick bodied fizzy and slightly dry palate.

Rich brown color with some red along the edges. Aroma is peppery and chocolate, like a dubbel. Taste is floral and hoppy, spicy indeed with some banana and nuts. This will be awesome in time and not bad now.

Thanks to ejadgiz for sharing this one. Pours a translucent orange amber with an average off white creamy head. Aroma of sweet malts, dark fruits and prunes. Flavors of the same.

Bottle. Densely packed microbubbles seem long lasting atop this copper behemoth. Nose is rich and lively. Dark fruits, light smokiness, exotic spices, light bubblegum, yeast, and wafts of alcohol permeate the air. Taste is very fruity and yeasty. More light smoke notes, roasty malts, light cocoa, black cherries and raisins, robust spiciness, and earthy hops. Body is moderately carbonated and at times creamy with a lingering dryness. Finishes with an abundance of dark ripened fruits, yeast, earthy hops, light spices, thinned dark chocolate and mild roasty notes. Excellent!

22oz bottle. Poured a clear dark orange color with a light tan head. Aroma was of raisin and light brownie. I also noted a hint of brown sugar as it warmed up a bit. Dry and somewhat vinous. I tasted raisin and molasses, but there were also hints of cherry and chocolate and a splash of red wine. Strange combination of aromas and flavors, but decent.

Bottle. I found this brew in october or november of 2005 in LA at a Bristol Farms Grocery Store. Originally I had thought about saving it for a big vertical tasting, but as I’m moving (still in SD for all my trading pals), and found it again I thought I might as well try it now. Drank from my DFH Snifter the only glass I have in my current apartment. Pours dark brown and cloudy with a nice tan head that has faded to a very thin layer. The nose is very malty and sweet with bit chocolate. I have to agree with gnoff this brew is really pretty spicy and robust, the hoppiness really shines through the malty smoky body of this brew. The only other vertical epic I’ve had is the 06 which is clearly more standard fare, I like the 06 a lot, but this is different and possibly more interesting. Now lets see what comes from the 07.
