Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

At the 2007 Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywine Festival in Vail. Pours a reddish dark brown to black in color with a gargantuan dissapating head that leaves remarkable intricate trabeculae of Brussells Lace. Aroma of a chocolate covered cherry and coffee roastedness. Lots of toffee and coffee and raisins to the mix. This is a deep beer. It’s like the surreal depth of sound that one got from vinyl over CD’s when one got stoned. Perhaps this would be a great beer to drink while stoned.

Bottle. Pours with a large, tan head over a dark ruby-brown body. Aroma of roast, candi sugar, brown sugar and light oxidation. Taste is brown sugar, berries, baked bread, oxidation and earth. Creamy mouthfeel and light bubbles.

Bottle. Very dark amber-mahogony beer with a nioce beige head. Rich malt aroma with some fruit and cola. Rich fruity/malty flavor - sweet malt, dates, raisins, yeasty spiciness. Full bodied. Easy to drink - hides alcohol well. Some cocoa and roastiness. What keeps this from being a great beer is that it misses the rich aftertaste. The flavor just sort of peters out without giving you enough satisfaction.

Pours a reddish brown color with a thin light brown head. Aroma of earth, caramel and mild peated malt. Very good flavor of of earth, caramel, peated malt, there might be a yeasty thing going on there too, it finishes bitter. The body is light with a creamy texture and soft carbonation.

Clear dark red with a small off-white head. Caramel smell. Sweet and malty beer with some fruity notes. Toffee/caramel dominates. I was disappointed by this one. I had this 05 next to an 06 at the BCTC 2006. Being an engineer I calculated that 06/05 = 1.2, therefore the Vertical 06 is 20% better than the 05, and honestly that’s pretty accurate.

Why wait? This stuff is good NOW. Not like I’ll ever find the 02.02.02 anyway. The beer is a dark reddish-brown color with a thick and foamy beige head. Thick and sticky lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, spice (what? there are no spices in this beer?) and raisin. Rich body with an immediately noticeable Belgian character. Yeast, spices and malt are prevalent, along with a bit of fruit in the background. The finish is spiced and hoppy. Definitely the best VE I have tried so far.

Nose has pitfruit, and deep malt. Auburn, small toffee head. Fruit flavours, some of which are plums, red grapes, prunes. Very complex, full bodied, bitter and bold. A fabulous beer!

Pours a very dark brown with a smooth tan head. Very nice roastiness to this brew with lots of fruit and spice notes. Kind of a chocolate-covered cherry flavor in the malts, yeasty esters throughout and a lot of bitterness in the finish. I think the alcohol showing and bitterness will die down a bunch in the aging, but a very solid tasty brew right now.
