Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Huge thanks to Travis (of Dunedin Brewery) for bringing along a vertical of Stone’s Vertical Epic to the epic Florida kick off party at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours murky fudgy brown with tiny off white head. The inviting aroma has notes of caramel, German dark bread, toffee, biscuit and faint rich nearly over ripe dark fruitiness. The taste was very nice but lacked the depth I was expecting. It had the smoothed with age notes noted in the nose such as caramel, biscuit malts, a bit of dark fruitiness and faint oxidation. Very nice treat.

Ruby red/amber/brown, off-white head. An interesting combination of the Belgian (especially the fruity character, such as cherry and grape in the aroma) and a brown ale. Good notes of dried fruits and pale suggestions of spice. Moderately dry to my palate. Always interesting, these Epics, but perhaps this one lacked the layers in flavor as it had in the aroma.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown colour with a nice head. Very nice aroma of heavy caramel and maltnes also notes of American hops. Very tasty flavour of caramel, malt and some nice hops. Ends up very alcoholic and with a touch of roastedness.

Deep ruby hue with medium head of large, foamy bubbles - aroma is mostly clove and the ever so familiar belgian yeast with hints of fruity esters - flavor is an odd mixture of chocolate, liquorice, light spice and lingering hoppiness - most of these flavors should work well together, but don’t - each struggles for dominance instead of existing in harmony - perhaps when 12.12.12. comes around this will be more balanced - for now it is just so so.

The beer emerges from the 22-ounce brown bottle a cloudless mahogany with an impressive semi-creamy light tan head, as it erodes the resultant lace forms a fine curtain to drape the glass. Nose is rich in malt with sweet plum like aromas, earthy aroma of Belgian yeast, citrus like in its crispness, fresh, with the start rich in malt and somewhat sweet, the top middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is meaningful in its acidity, the hops delectable and the aftertaste dry and long lasting, so far of the Epics I’ve sampled this is my favorite, damn just think how good this will be in coming years.

rating #50. Poured a deep brown with zero head. Wish it actually had some. Full, mouth-coating palate with a luscious, malty, fruity, perfectly balanced flavor. Alcohol was perfectly hidden: I was more than happy to quaff the bomber.

On the other hand, not really sure why this is marked as a Belgian Strong. Tastes loads more like an American Strong to me. In fact, I noticed almost no Belgian flavors whatsoever. Oh well.

Bottle at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens on 08/03/2008 on day three of RBSG 2008. Dark amber body with a small tan head. Very spicy caramel aroma. Caramel and spice flavor. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle shared with GregClow, Jerc, Hogtown Harry, and Blankboy, Greg’s bottle. Nice sweet malty aroma with a little spiciness. And what I like to call "Belgian Booze". Decent sweet alcohol taste. Actually, this thing becomes way too damn sweet. And the alcohol kicks in as well. What started out as (wow, am I about to sing an REO Speedwagon lyric?...no) a nice Belgian Strong has turned into a sweet boozy monster. Tick and syrupy, slightly bitter finish, with even a little roast/smoke in the finish. This just became way too unbalanced for me.
