Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

At the 2007 Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywine Festival in Vail. Pours a reddish dark brown to black in color with a gargantuan dissapating head that leaves remarkable intricate trabeculae of Brussells Lace. Aroma of a chocolate covered cherry and coffee roastedness. Lots of toffee and coffee and raisins to the mix. This is a deep beer. It’s like the surreal depth of sound that one got from vinyl over CD’s when one got stoned. Perhaps this would be a great beer to drink while stoned.

I quite enjoyed this one. Has that red/amber/orange like colour that seems to be previlant amongst west coats beers. Pretty tall fluffy coarse head that was mostly white. Nice belgian yesty aroma that gives of the cursory dark fruits and lets slide some spice. Mostly, I noticed the advertised clove (my nose isn’t too good). I liked how this tickled my tongue with its lively carbonation. This wasn’t quite thick and chewy, but had a good body to it. Sweet flavours with some caramel, a bit of roast. Certianly there are dark malts in here, with some more spice notes

Bottle. Poured a dark brown hue with an average light brown head. Aroma was complex of heavy roasted malt, hops and molasses. Full body with small alcoholbite finish. Flavor was moderate sweet and light bitter which was long in duration. Very good brew.

dark brown with a red tint, it is almost black with a huge grey brown head. sweet molasses nose, this smell reminds me of a quad with spicy alcohol and dark fruits. taste is strong malt and sugar, wow, like a belgian barleywine, should be better in a few years when this sucker mellows. nice chocoloate, plum, biscuit, buttery finish.

pours a dark brown with a hint of crimson red peeking through.very lovely aromas of cloves, brown sugar, yeast, and malts.the flavor boasts much of the same.id say this is the best vertical yet.very sweet but well rounded.excellent stuff indeed. RE-RATE:5/15/06.the beer is more balanced now then when it was fresh for sure.lots more chocolate, palate is smooth and the alcohol is well hidden.i think ill up my rating on this one.RE-RATE:lots more chocolate, although the mouthfeel is fading a bit.

Dark brown, almost black with a nice thick off white head and lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, over ripe fruit, alcohol and just a touch of chocolate. Sweet malt and alcohol flavor with roast and spice as the beer warms. Good stuff.

Bottle: Finally i got my hands on some this after anxiously waiting for the last few months. Beautiful dark mahogany color; once held against light turns to a amber hue that is clearly visible through. Head is a thin cushy foam thats a light tan but will eventually break up. Nose has an upfront clove aroma with some cinnamon as well, and I also can get a whiff of toffee and malt. The flavor has a moderate amount of malts used and has a undeniable hop spiceness. Found this VE much more darker and better in flavor than the 04. I will age and re-rate in a few months and see how much more it calms down and my ratings change.
