Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Appearance: Nearly opaque dark ruby red, you can just barely see through it if you hold it up in front of a light. A moderate offwhite head, mild lacing. Aroma: A light candied plum, a dash of spices, belgian yeast, light roasted malts. Flavor Profile: Rich but not too thick, structured flavor profile of fruitiness, which is candied plums, bananas and I think dark cherries. A little sweet, but also supported by some matching roasted malts, a little bit of hops and some complimentary sugary chewy belgian yeast. A touch of cocoa and earthiness aftertaste. VERY nice brew. Palate: Thich like all of stones fine brews, weighty, but refrains from going overboard. I’d put its weight on part with the arrogant bastard. I imagine when this baby ages it will be one of the greatest blended beers ever concocted by the hand of a man.

Dark, clear ruby with a good initial head that dissipates, but can be easily summoned with a little agitation. When chilled, the first aroma is somewhat metallic ... my bad! It shouldn’t be chilled. Very resinous, vinous and musty (almost dirty) aromas with a slight hint of hops and dark chocolate. As it warms, a great spiciness takes over and invites some dark fruits (mostly plum and raisin). Very full and satisfying mouthfeel. Like the aroma, the flavor is very vinous and winelike. This is very reminiscent of an abt. With warmth comes a surge of baker’s chocolate, spices and brown sugar. It finishes dry and bitter with an astringency (pretty much like all Stone brews)

This is a really nicve belgian ale brewed by stone. Althogh I prefer hopped beasts, belgians offer a nice rotten fruit taste that tastes good.

Deep brown with mahogany highlight. The aroma is choclatey with a slight burnt note and some plum sweetness. A nice balance of fruity sweetness and chocolate malts work great in the body. Smooth mouthfeel and slightly bitter finish. The yeast plays such a backseat roll, this comes off more like a Doppelbock than a Belgian. Good stuff anyways.

Quite good, like the 03 version on sterioids. This will probably age very similiar. Deep ruby color, fruity nose malt, grapes and alcohol. Taste is dark fruits, and maty merlot along with liquor. Finish has is a lingering sweet and bitter at the same time thing going on. The flavors are all over the place and aging may do this one some good. That said, this beer is great right now and it remains to be seen if aging will blend the flavors well or take it’s character away ala the ’03 VE.

Bottle bought at the spirit haus a couple years back. Shared with some beer dork last sunday. Pour was a dark, hazy brown with a healthy white head. Nose is strong with brown sugar, a little alcohol, some clove and spices. Has a very sweet, yet refined, flavor--similar to a a nice, aged barleywine. Raisins, other dark fruits, belgian yeast was evident. This has held up well.
