Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Bottle on the eve of the 060606 release: Dark red pour with a medium light tan head that faded quickly. Aroma has dark fruits, some spices. Flavor, more dark fruits, some roasted notes, a touch of chocolate. Nice full mouthfeel, a little warming from the alcohol. This is doing pretty well right now, but I don’t know if it’s got another six and a half years left in it.

From the Bottle at the Falling Rock Tap House, Denver 08/10/2008 Very malty aroma. Mid brown coloured and rich on the palate with lots of alcohol present. Crisp and slightly dry sweet malt finish.

22 oz bottle (I still have one in waiting). Pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head. Heavy caramel malt aroma, with raisins and other dark fruit in there as well as yeast and some spices. Good flavor. It has a little bit of an aftertaste and lingers in your mouth. Still good. Some serious stuff.

Bottle. I love Stone brews, never had one I didn’t love. This Epic ale is no exception. It’s certainly not for the entry level beer person. Only a person with a love of thick, rich, full flavored beers can appreciate this. It’s described well here by other reviewers...I would only add that I taste a small similarity to the Stone Porter.

22 oz bottle tasted around the 777 release date. Big caramely malty nose blended with a bit of cherry notes and a bit of semi-sweet chocolate. The flavor is a lot of the same, yet so mellow after 2 yrs and quite well blended together with the age. The chestnutty flavor comes out a bit in the body, but is mainly swept over throughout by big sweet malts. A tiny hop presence was still traceable. Definitely remember enjoying this one slowly...meaning, I loved it!

Huge thanks to Travis (of Dunedin Brewery) for bringing along a vertical of Stone’s Vertical Epic to the epic Florida kick off party at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours murky fudgy brown with tiny off white head. The inviting aroma has notes of caramel, German dark bread, toffee, biscuit and faint rich nearly over ripe dark fruitiness. The taste was very nice but lacked the depth I was expecting. It had the smoothed with age notes noted in the nose such as caramel, biscuit malts, a bit of dark fruitiness and faint oxidation. Very nice treat.

Bottle. Great coffee color with a white head. Aroma has notes of toffee, prunes, and alcohol. Flavor is bitter all the way with a strong finish - has a smoky, burnt, bittersweet chocolate flavor. Mouthfeel is a tad watery and lightly carbonated.

Poured dark brown with foamy head. Aroma is caramel, nuts, and dark fruit. Flavor the same. Medium/light body.
