| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 17, 2005 Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark orange-brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted/roasted grain, cooked caramel), lightly hoppy (apricot), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of clove, oregano, orange peel, cola.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Like an imitation Fantome Black Ghost, perhaps, but without the rustic farmhouse character. Reminds me of something Ommegang would make for some reason (just a tad harsh/edgy/unrefined in the finish). Surprisingly good overall, though. Finally seeing a little improvement in the head size/retention from Stone here, but still disappointing compared to most Belgian beers. mjg74 (2000), La Mesa, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 21, 2005 Pours a dark ruby color. Aroma contains yeast, grains, apples, and a little bit of alcohol. Some roasty and grainy flavor. A bit of alcohol is present. A bit of maltiness as well. I would say that this is fairly tasty. pivo (2537), Germany

Color is dark brown amber with a medium off-white head. Flavor starts with some Belgian spice followed by rich dark fruit and a semi-sweet finish. Medium bodied and creamy with lively carbonation. radiomgb (2048), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 24, 2007 Mahogany in colour, thin dissipating tan coloured head, little to no lacing. The aroma is a bit thin, for some reason I picked up on some vegetables, lightly sweet with some caramel, light citric hops, some minor alcohol. The flavour is of some noticable alcohol, gingerbread, quite sweet, caramel, yeast and some light spice. Very sweet mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long and sweet with caramel and spice. This is holding up better then the other Vertical Epic Ales that I have had but this is younger. Again I’m not sure if this can last until 2012.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 2, 2005 Dark color. Almost cola looking. Yeast, bread, muffin nose. Plum flavors. Raisins. Much of dark fruits mixed together in a palate raising concoction of flavors. Mostly sweet: needed some more rounding out flavors. Medium body. Very good. Rockinout (946), Kent, Ohio, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 24, 2008 Deep mahogany color. Head quickly disappears. Licquorice, milk chocolate, candy sugar in the nose make me think this is very close to a dubble. The mouth carries through on the dubble theme, but I still get some bready character, which I don’t expect in this beer and it doesn’t mesh as well as previous years. Lingering milk chocolate, liquorice, warming finish.
