Commercial Description:
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

Pours with a burgundy body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet with dark fermented fruit notes, a touch of cinamon and other spices, as well as, a slight yeastiness. Medium bodied, smooth and dry.

sampled June 05: Mahogany brown with a lasting creamy tan head. Notes of coco, brown sugar, earth, raisins, plum, and walnut in the nose. Toast, coco, herbs, currant, toasted coconut(?), almonds, and more brown sugar. Finishes sweet and malty with dried fruit, yeast, and a touch of herbal bitterness.

Dark ruby brown color with a large beige head. Strong clove, nutmeg, dark fruit and bread aroma. Sweet bread, clove, nutmeg and pine flavors. Lightly tingly with a dry finish.

bottle. brownish-mahogany body with a small off-white head. great aroma of raisins, prunes, rich malt, and sugar sweetness. decadent full body with lots of rich sweet malt and dark fruit. chocolate and alcohol finish. I’d like to pick up a few bottles to put away for a few years to see if it gets any better. Very nice.

Dark candied fruit with loads of belgian yeast and malt on the nose. I was surprised that no extra spices were added as spice did come through.

A very unique brewing idea. Definitely wouldn’t have said that there were no spices in it, since it reminds me of Belgian ales (which usu. have them). Perhaps will be better with age, who can tell. Wish I woulda caught on to this idea three years ago.

Ruby brown, clear, nice tan fluffy head. A mildly musty sweet aroma, with a trappist like note to it. It does remind me of Rochefort a bit, or even more recently, Chouffe Nice or Fantome Christmas, but much less assertive. Very smooth sweet flavor, with rich Belgian malty fruitiness. Spicy finish. This is a decent Belgian that will age, but may oxidize with time too much to enjoy by 2012.
