hydros (7), Riverside, California, USA does not count Jun 21, 2007 22 oz bottle. Dark brown with lighter head. Complex spiced aroma. Medium body with a complex flavor. Some hops, but well balanced. Overall one of my favorite brews. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Jun 21, 2007 Pours black with a small off white head. Smells of sweet candy sugar, dark fruits, grapes, and heavy malts. The taste is also sweet but more of a dark fruity sweet with some sugar and raisins. Nice and thick on the palate. Very good representation of a dubbel from an American brewer. Very rich and thick taste and the aftertaste leaves a sweet resin on the lips and in the back of the mouth. Good job here. SoLan (1369), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 20, 2007 Dark brown/black with dark ruby/brown edges and 2.5cm of frothy, tan head. Nose of roasty, bittersweet chocolate chip cookies with raisins. Some bready yeast, also. Flavor is the same with some earthiness and subtle, dark, berry-like tartness. Full/medium body, well carbonated yet soft. Excellent. Much better after a year than it was fresh. crazyvin (1246), New York, USA Jun 8, 2007 my #805 rating.... poured a deep, opaque brown hue with a thin tan head. It was slightly fizzy, but not enough to make it over carbonated. Some fruits on the aroma, mostly dried. The aroma also had notes of chocolate, yeast and nuts. Flavor was malty with some fruit notes, a little spice and a nice chocolate finish. Alcohol was mild but warming. Good beer, glad i waited the year to drink. Appearance: Pours a dark chestnut brown body topped with a fizzy, thin brown-colored head.
Smell: Aroma is largely fruity (bananas and plums) and chocolaty, imbued with a Belgium yeast scent and a wee amount of smoke.
Curiouser and curiouser...
Taste: Leading flavors of dark chocolate, black licorice, molasses, and grapes. Eventually achieves some herbal bitterness and ends with a yeasty dry finish. Not nearly as sweet as the nose would have you believe.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, creamy, and has a mild carbonation which helps to maintain a light finish.
Drinkability: Admirable cross-style hybrid brew showing characteristics of a dubbel, weizenbock, smoked porter, and more.
Catch ya in 2012, little bomber! joohefner (380), Isla Vista, California, USA Jun 4, 2007 black/brown/blue with medium brown tan head. smells of floral dark fruits and light mocha and grainy malt. viscous and nice carbonation. smooth and slight vanilla creaminess. alcohol is definitely apparent but not overpowering, some sage licorice and cloves. uuummm it’s a stone...just a typical high quality dubbel brianjames1 (322), Northridge, California, USA Jun 3, 2007 Pours dark, aroma is spicy, flavors of raisens and black licorice, pretty good ale cant wait for the 07. snoot (277), Anaheim, California, USA Jun 1, 2007 Pours very dark, almost stout like. Initial head is nice, compact bubbles, but it fades quickly to light lacing. Aroma is quite nice, lots of dark fruit. Flavors are very interesting, starts off with the dark fruits from the aroma, but quickly dries out. The aftertaste lingers on the tongue much like a Rochefort, maybe even a hint of that same tobacco flavor. Mouthfeel is a little thin, and the carbonation is a little lower than I’d like. On a side note, I like this from Stone...it’s more proof they can do something other than hops hops hops.
