Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is chocolate, banana, cloves, dried fruit and vanilla. A med to full bodied double. Malts are dark fruit, brown sugar and molasses, lots of vanilla and chocolate as well. Sweet, but not cloying. Big beer. I think this one will age very well. Hides the alcohol nicely. Much more like the 03 vertical without some of the spiciness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet. jerc (3954), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 13, 2006 Black body with a moderate tan head (3+). Sweet malt aroma sort of anise like notes, very light woody chocolate and a touch of light alcohol. Dry spice in the flavour, some malt, finish is surprisingly bitter, covering up a light anise character. Average palate is lighter than I would like for this. Pleasant but a bit underwhelming. 7/3+/6-7/3/14 thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 18, 2006 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized tan colored bubbles that were and left behind a opaque dark brown colored body and a good lacing. The nice aroma was vinous toasted malt sweet and dark malt. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start with a mellow finish. The flavor contained notes of sweet mildly vinous dark malt and chocolate. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again. Rciesla (3810), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 16, 2007 I couldn’t stand it anymore and finally cracked this baby open as I enjoy my first night of football sprawled on my couch. Poured a deep stained mahogoney red-black with barely a whisper of carbonation or head. The aroma is strangely waxy, and a bit date-like ... I don’t know how else to describe it ... This drinks a lot mellower than I’d expected it to, and with much different of a flavor profile than I’d expecte, too. This has a rich dark fruity character, mostly raisin, hint of licorice, plum, blackberry, pinot noir. For all those rich flavors, this goes down far too easily, a nice sipper on this nice cool evening as I watch the Patriots smoke the Chargers.(#3097, 9/16/2007) sayravai (3773), Helsinki, Finland
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 12, 2008 (Bottled, 0.66l) Almost clear, dark ruby with a small head. Grainy-malty, lightly caramely aroma. Sweetish, caramely and grainy flavor with hints of anise and licorice, and somewhat clear alcohol presence. Medium-bodied, low-carbonated palate with slight alcohol burn. A decent Strong Ale, but I kinda expected more of an Abbey Dubbel from Stone. egajdzis (3636), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 12, 2006 Updated: Dec 14, 2006Poured a deep, dark, red color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, macadamia nuts, clove, banana, roasted malts, vanilla, dark fruits, and smoked meats. Taste of more roasted malt, vanilla, light citrus fruits, with smokey, bittersweet chocolate, toffee, nougat, dried fruits, light spicy yeast, and faint alcohol, with a light bitterness in the finish as well. Best Vertical Epic i’ve had yet, I like what the new guy is doing!
