Sweet yeasty aroma, lots of dark fruit. Very rich right up front. Thick roasted dark fruit flavors. A touch of yeastiness. Finish is hoppy bitter. Slightly sour. Alcohol is very well hidden. Fairly spicy as well. Very tasty. Andrew196 (1091), Katy, Texas, USA

Poured with very little head, looked almost identical to coca cola minus the effervescence. A bit on the yeasty / alcohol side at the nose....this leveled out as it warmed. Nice full bodied taste with a well rounded finish. Very smooth yet bold somehow.....nice. papajohn (1055), San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA

Aroma is spicy with dark fruit and a wiff of banana. Flavor is spicy and peppery with dark fruit and a little nuttyness finishing somewhat dry with a hint of chocolate and some banana comming through as it warmed. Medium bodied and smooth with moderate carbonation. JohnC (2286), Mission Viejo, California, USA

Very dark brown with a frothy white head which quickly diminishes. The aroma is lightly spicy, yet has some coffee notes. The body is medium at best. The flavor initially hits the tip of your tongue with some bitterness, but after that a nutty roastiness (maybe chestnuts) hits you along with flavors of chocolate and dried fruit. This should age well. radiomgb (2068), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 24, 2007 Clear dark mahogany in colour, long lasting off-white coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is malty, earthy, some gingerbread, molasses, moderate caramel sweetness. The flavour has some spice, dark malts, moderate sweetness, cookies, pepper, yeasty, some light chocolate. Moderately sweet mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes sweet, some alcohol makes an appearance, lingering. The best of the Vertical Epics to date. I can see this one lasting.

In mouth, more malty with definite chocolate notes, less licorice and less alcohol in mouth, still a very smooth ale. Enjoyed on tap at BCTC 2006. jb (1058), Rochester, New York, USA

Very dark brown with reddish highlights, thick tan head. Plenty of malt and plums and roasted notes in the nose. Creamy palate that is sugary, a tiny bit sour, with malt and a bit of hops. The alcohol is well disguised. The monks would be happy with it.
