nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Nov 8, 2009 On tap at Stone Bistro & World Gardens. Clear reddish-copper color with a small white head. Aroma is red wine, pale malt, spices, and a mild tartness. Flavor is pale malt, red wine, and some juniper/anise gruit-like herbal notes. Somewhat tart. Body is medium and carbonation is soft. Good overall but not quite what I expected. awiseman01 (318), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Sep 19, 2009 Growler special thanks to danielcurtis81. Tasted side by side with the regular 07. This pours similar in cloudiness and color, a reddish orange, but slightly darker due to the aging. Nose is spices, fruit and a little sour. Taste is same spices (cinnamon, clove, coriander), fresh fruit (peaches, lemons, citrus) and an added red fruit character as well as the hints of red wine barrel again. This drinks just slightly smoother than the regular version and a little more pleasing palate. Glad I got to try this version. Elwood (647), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Sep 19, 2009 Serving: Draft.
Appearance: Light amber with touches of yellow and a foamy, white head. Decent head retention and great lacing.
Aroma: Oak, red wine, almost a note of whisky, alcohol, light cola notes. Unusual but nice.
Flavor: Light, tart fruit note, oak, big alcohol notes, floral and a little soap as well. Light lemon notes emerge as the beer warms. I am surprised the ABV is that low. I would have guessed much higher.
Palate: Medium-low carbonation with a medium mouthfeel and a big, boozy finish.
Overall: This is a huge beer that manages great balance despite a higher alcohol content. Still, the alcohol could be hidden a little better. It is deceptively drinkable. Seek this one out. It is definitely worth trying. sauceyhops (104), carlsbad, California, USA Sep 17, 2009 I will go ahead and admit that this will be one of my worst ratings to date because I was absolutely trashed by the time I got around to this beer. I will just keep it simple. I can tell you one thing about this beer... It was F***ing amazing. nightrider (370), encinitas, California, USA Sep 16, 2009 On tap from PP Carlsbad. Pour was golden amber. Aromas of grape. Medium bodied brew. Flavors were of Belgian yeast, subtle spice, and oak. The red wine tannic fruit quality definitely present. Smooth finish. Not bad. hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA Aug 21, 2009 Nice tannic red wine aroma. Very fruity with a dry finish. Certainly more wine like overall, I wish I could remember what the regular version was like. juiceisloose (634), Windermere, Florida, USA Aug 15, 2009 Growler, courtesy JW77. Pours a hazy golden color with an orange tint topped by a small and foamy tan colored head. Some thin rings of lace cling to the glass. The aroma showed notes of cinnamon and spices, some bready yeast, and oak. The flavor follows with some nice red fruits and vinous characters from the barrels to go with the spices and yeast. There is a hint of tartness as well. Medium bodied with nice carbonation and very easy to drink. This is a nice beer, but I think I was expecting something different. Beerlando (2281), Orlando, Florida, USA Aug 11, 2009 Growler, courtesy JW77. Pours a hazy golden-orange amber hue with a small, foamy tan head. Thin bands of lacing circle the glass, coating it well in tiered steps. The aroma shows a clean graininess and sweet sipce, reminiscent of Cinnamon Life cereal, with an estery, Belgian yeast overtone and subtle oaking. Flavors are similarly structured, vinous from the woody barrel, with hints of orchard fruit disbursed amongst the clean cereal grain and yeasty spice. The palate seems to have thinned out a bit, but is otherwise smooth and agreeable. Very solid brew. I prefer this slightly to the non-barrel aged version.
