Commercial Description:
In this year's edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: Saisons and Golden Triples. As such, the Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts, and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices --- including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home) --- and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

Cloudy golden pour with a thin white head. Interesting aroma of coriander, yeast and honey. Good flavor of coriander, yeast, herbs and honey. The body is medium with an oily texture and soft carbonation.

Sweet, effervescent allspice in the nose. Two Belgian styles in a row in the Vertical Epic series. Hazy amber with a small, light tan head. No visible carbonation. Packs a punch. Sweet and powerful. Tastes as it smells to a large degree. Strong alcohol in the finish that is very satisfying. Creamy and smooth. The allspice I detected in the nose is likely more due to the citrus peels and cardamom. Sparsely carbonated. No lace to speak of. A huge thanks to BWKrieger for hooking me up with this brew! This brew is better when served cold.

22 oz. bottle. Pours an old gold with tons of floaties and a decent sized light-tan head. Oranges and peels, lemons, ginger, pears, vanilla and brown sugar in the aroma. Medium to thin-bodied. A fruity start with lots of pears, Golden Delicious apples, caramel and some oranges. Finishes with hints of vanilla and some warming alcohol. Pretty sweet throughout. If offered again, I’d pass.

22oz bottle from Bev Mo Carmel Mountain. Brew poured a bright golden orange with a big rocky off white head. Nose was spicy and fruity with some hops in the backdrop. Flavor was much like the nose with a bit more hops prevalent. My least favorite of the Verticals.

I was pleasantly surprised. I thought this would be a random run of the mill "ale wtih spices".... I loved the aroma - sweet citrusy notes. And the flavor was very pleasing... nice malty flavor balanced with the orange/grapefruit/lemon note spices brewed in. This was great. Not terribly complex and not sure how much better if I let this one age for 4+ more years. Good beer.

[1023-20080101] Bottle (07.07.07). Mild fishy grains aroma has a hint of lemon hops. Clear, orange brown body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Tangy sweet grains and lime zest flavour has a boozy ginger bite of hot spices. Medium body. Strange tang, gets better as it warms.

Bomber pour orange – copper with a wisp of a bright white head. Big aroma of Belgian yeast, spice like coriander and other spices I can’t identify along with apple, pear and some lemon. The taste has big fruity flavors with apple, pear and some mild cranberry and kiwi. There’s a bunch of spices too. I think I’m getting coriander, clove, ginger and other tough to pin down spice notes. Yummy now. I can’t wait to try this with more age.

Pours an opaque orange with a thicker white head. Has a fruity aroma of orange, grapefruit, and some spices. The beer has a nice balance with just a little bit of the alcohol burn. Lots of fruit flavor, a little cinnamon, and it seemed like a little bit of coriander. Not as good as some of the other epics I have had, but still well done.
