Commercial Description:
In this year's edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: Saisons and Golden Triples. As such, the Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts, and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices --- including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home) --- and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

This is one of the nicer takes on the malty Belgian ales that I’ve tried, particularly by an American brewer, most of whom produce very disappointing results when making Belgian strong ales and trippels. this pours a cinnamon nut-brown with vibrant carbonation. Complex aromas of cinnamon, grapefruit, orange peel, ginger, all-spice. More spicy than fruity. Medium bodied yeasty mouthfeel. I’d say this leans toward being a heavily spiced witbier rather than a dubbel or trippel. It’s very nice. I bought several extras, which I will store and drink in a few years.

Bottle, from Julio’s Good aroma, sweet, fruity & spicy. Fruit is citrusy and berry, spice is ginger and coriander. Very clean brownish orange color, lively carbonation. Good head that faded quickly, no lacing though. Sweet spiced flavor. Like aroma thought the berry flavor really came through. Medium body, lite creamy mouthfeel, spiced sweet finish. Good brew, aroma and flavor were pretty close to one another.

Bottle from trade with Odeed. Pours a clear copper-orange with a thin white head that dissipates to a few broken wisps in the middle of the glass. Sweet Belgian yeasty aroma, citric, with highlights of bitter orange peel. Taste was reminiscent of a wit - mild sweetness then moving on to orange peel and coriander. A sour citric tang develops on the finish, a unique angle where the grapefruit, lemon, and orange peels in the description come out. The malts here are more forward in a wit, though a there is no chalky texture. An interesting brew, some nuanced characters that somehow aren’t really coming together just yet.

Bottle. I know that I should wait about 5 years to drink this, but I thought it would be good to get an initial tasting to see how it changes. Clear gold pour with a red hue, very little head, and visible carbonation. Aroma of caramel malt, raisins, lots of spices, bubblegum. Malts and spice dominate the flavor, with some raisins and yeast in the finish. The spices are over-the-top.

Ok this is turning into another overhyped brew. Bomber from Apu at the rip and run. Pours a crisp clear deep golden amber with a large bubble head that vanishes. For me it was all down hill from there. Nose is of honey coverd cardamom and allspice. Raspy ginger undertones thru out body and well into ludicrously extended finish. Spruce and pepper. Tangyness is over the top and the body nearly too sweet. Ugh1 Big Strike for stone ( their first in my book). Hope it filled their coffers. Pass.

Bottle, opened to mark the birth of my nephew Wyatt.. shared with a friend in sharpsburg. a wonderful citrus aroma filled the room once poured into the glasses. little to medium head that disapated soon after. the flavor was sweet - picked up on bananas, pineapple, orange and apple fruits, malt flavor came in near the end, which was a nice follow-up to the sweetness. smooth on the palate with light, tingly bubbles. can’t wait for the 080808.

Thanks to Ibrew2or3 for schlepping this bottle back from California for me. Cloudy amber body, medium sized off white head. Pretty sudsy looking, medium retention and coating lacing. Lots of sediment floating around in the glass. Nose of candied sugars, dried dark fruits, ginger, yeast, assorted spices and some hint of the alcohol. Tastes pretty spot on to what it smells like, a big kick of the ginger and spice, with a nice malty and fruit backing. Slick mouthfeel. Very soft palate, low carbonation. Medium bodied. Very lengthy finish, full of spice, sugars and ginger. Happy to have another one to cellar, I’m interested to see where this goes in a year.
