Commercial Description:
In this year's edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: Saisons and Golden Triples. As such, the Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts, and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices --- including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home) --- and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

Bottle. Pours a bright orange body with a small white covering. Prominent cereal aroma with some sugar, bubblegum, and pear notes. Flavour is on the sweet side - notes of pear, cereal, plum skins, and plenty of alcohol.

Pours a pretty clear golden/amber color with a slight white head. Aroma is yeast with spice and citrus notes noticeable. The taste is very yeasty, dissolving into a pleasant spicy aftertaste that isn’t all the way Tripel but closer to that than saison. Malt slightly noticeable, I found the yeast to be dominant. Not as good as their outstanding offering from last year, but very solid.

Pretty clear golden color with only a slight head... faded quickly and left almost nothing behind. Aroma was definitely pretty spicy and citrusy... with a lot of a belgian yeast character (to be expected). If it was intended to be a cross between a saison and a tripel, I’d say this beer is much more of a tripel. I didn’t detect a lot of the robust hoppiness that you’d expect to find in a saison. The malty sugary body was definitely the dominant element. Overall very good, looking forward to tasting another one in five years...

Maybe I’ve been drinking too many seasonal pumpkin beers, but this seems like one. The spices are clearly pronounced in the aroma and the taste. The mouthfeel is sticky, which in my opinion is typical of many beers which use Belgian yeast strains. The color is a cloudy orange. The aftertaste is just a touch bitter. It may be a little bit too heavy to be a session beer, but I hope I can find one of these in a few years to see how well it aged.

The spices are the first things that jump out at you as soon as the beer touches your tongue. Definately a good brew that is really interesting. Writing about it makes me want another one.

Bottle (650ml) shared with HogTownHarry & tupalev -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a hazy golden-orange with an average size lasting white head. Aroma of caramel malt, spices, yeast, faint hops, honey and some slightly funky yeast -- kind of Saison-like to me. Yeasty flavour along with spices, hops, honey and some light sweetness. Medium bodied. Great idea, Saison and Golden Triple, I enjoyed it a lot.

Bottle: Poured a deep orangey color ale with a small foamy head with little retention and no lacing. Aroma of spices and rich sweet Belgian malt with some cardamom. Taste is dominated by some spicy notes with lots of cardamom with what seems like wheat. Texture is oily with a thick body and some medium carbonation. Definitely too sweet and oily for what I usually looks for in Belgian ale but interesting nonetheless. Also, as much as I like the experimentation, I have a hard time seeing this one improving over the next five years.

Light hazy deep golden colour with a small white head. Malty, alcohol sweet aroma with a spicy note and hints of vinous fruit. Malty, fruity and alcohol sweet flavor with a spicy notes. Light dry and spicy finish.
