Commercial Description:
In this year's edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: Saisons and Golden Triples. As such, the Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts, and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices --- including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home) --- and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

Pours bright copper with a large beige head. The aroma has lots of citrus rind as mentioned on the label, candied malt that very tripel-like, earthy yeast and some spices, especially the ginger. Medium crisp body with some graininess and please sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with the dryness of citrus malt that is counterbalanced with the sweetness of the Belgium tripel malt profile. There is some bitterness of hops and spices. It is complex and odd, but I like it. The finish gets spicier with lots of ginger. A nice beer I’ll be interested to try after a bit of time has passed.

Pale golden beer with a thin head that reduces quickly to thin film. The aroma promises a good beer but that first taste is a big disappointment, but then I have never been a big fan of Saison’s. I will say that after finishing about half of the bottle I was able to start distinguishing the different flavors but by the time I was done my overall impression wasn’t that great (rotten banannas). This is probably the first selection I have had from this brewery that I did not like.

I was rather disappointed in this one. it smelled rather good, but the taste killed it for me. It was missing what i have come to expect from a belgian strong and stone for that matter. maybe some age could do this beer some good.

the color is a golder amber with a small and brief head. the smell is of heavy esters, strong aromas of dark fruits, caramel and such, not at all disappointing. The flavor is a bit more dry and bitter than I expected with a sweet and bitter middle and a clean finish. overall a well crafted beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden-orange with a small white head that quickly disappears.

The aroma is wheaty malts with some spices and a little fruit and alcohol and some grassy hops.

The flavor is sweet malts, spices (clove, ginger) with some fruitiness. It has a grassy bitter finish. As it warms, the sweetness and ginger become a little cloying. The mouthfeel is medium and watery with low but sharp carbonation.

Overall, a decent Belgian, but not too striking to me. The blend of overwhelming flavors don’t balance out really well.

650 ml. Golden-orange with a small head that lasts well. Aroma of Belgian yeast, spicy bubblegum, slight citrus. Bubblegum and cereal malt flavors appear first, spiciness of citrus peel and maybe some ginger shows up in the middle. Finish is dry and white wine-like, with bubblegum added. Caught some faint pine resin on one finish. Palate is pretty smooth, nearly medium-bodied, and dry on the finish. Alcohol warming on the end is nice, even in summer. Golden Triples and Saisons are not really my favorite styles, but this one is pretty good.

22 oz bomber. Pours a clear golden orange with a medium white head. Nice spicy aroma with hints of cinnamon, ginger, orange peel, fruity esters and yeast. Taste is a sweet and spicy combination of ginger, cinnamon, fresh yeast with an orange peel finish. Very nice. Probably my favorite thus far in the Vertical series.

Draft. Deep, brown-black color. Even, yeasty, sugary. Smooth, with ginger and citrusy notes ringing in the back of the throat. Somewhat empty and surprisingly disappointing relative to Stone’s reputation and normal offerings. Sampled @ BCTC 2007
