Commercial Description:
The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish that leads you to want to drink more and more of this beer!

This poured a golden color with a white head. The aroma is quite spicy with some perfume, citrus mainly lemons, and bananas. The flavor has some hops to it with some citrus and pine showing through. I also get some bananas, cloves, and more spices. This beer seems confused as to what it wants to be. Overall it was interesting but nothing I have much desire to return to though.

Bottled. Clear golden color, short head. Aroma is bit spicy and quite hoppy, slight grassy even. Decent bitter taste, bit citrus. Quite ok.

Golden, amber colored brew. Hoppy aroma. Flavor has got some good westcoast hoppiness. Some spices, sweetness. Nice one!

Aroma of alcohol, bread, yeast, and some hops. Pours a pale gold with a small white head. Taste is great - bannanas, cloves, bread, spicy hops, lemon, grass. Although the alcohol is prevalent in the aroma, it is very well-hidden in the flavor profile - actually it’s almost unnoticable. Fantastic combination of citrusy American hops with Belgian malts. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

From a bottle poured an amber/copper color with a small head. Nice sweet flavor which hides the alcohol flavor well.

Draught at GABF 2008. Clear yellow - white head. Lovely hoppy, grainy, spicy, straw, hay, licorice, licorice yeasty, honey, pepper, light light banana notes, piney, resin. Lovely - very lovely.

Big bottle. Gold colour with thin white head. More mellon than hop in the aroma. Nicely hopped golden ale, perhaps more smooth and American than Belgian. A bit of aggressive bitterness does not quite seem supplied by the hops. Doesn’t have the big Belgian profile I would expect and the hops are moderately high but not overwhelming.

For a spicy ale, this is not bad. Nose is a subtle mix of pepper, clove and fruit. Taste is a full melange of the same. Mouthfeel is somewhat thin. Finish reminds me of my grandmother’s potpourri.
