Commercial Description:
The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish that leads you to want to drink more and more of this beer!

Bottle. Nice orange pour with some white head. Aroma is candy sugar, dark fruit, spices, and fruity yeast. Flavor is pretty sweet belgian malt, tripelesque, banana- bubblegum like sugar, with resinous hops and a fair amount of spicing. The spicing and the hops come off a little medicinal when together like this, but I am guessing that will change in 4 years.

Bottle from BevMo. Very thin head, copper color. Very interesting taste, not what I expected at all. Very fruity with figs, grapes, and spices. A good beer that would probably age well.

Bottle from Andronico’s Market. Pours light and hazy with a thing quickly vanishing head. Deep aroma has hops, malt, nuts, and fruit- very inviting and interesting. Palate was surprisingly full and syrupy with light carbonation. The flavors are numerous and well-balanced. Fruit, sweet caramel, malt, nuts, and strong hops interplay but are never overbearing. Warming alcohol in the background so the higher A.B.V is detectable but subtle. Long floral finish with grass, spice, and hops. I had this on a hot summer day and it was a bit heavy-bodied but still refreshing and very enjoyable. This is an impressive beer.

Golden/amber color with white fizzy head. Spicy, fruity, and bitter. Fizzy on the palate and bitter finish. Great beer.

Sparkling clear apple juice looking body topped by a quickly vanishing white frothy head. Sweetness leads into a healthy does of citrus hops. The flavor is interesting, initial sweetness with hints of potential cloying, quickly changes into a spicy, hoppy, bready, interesting beer. I really like this one. I would really like to see this one made into a regular (or at least seasonal) offering from Stone. One Roger one Ebert. Yum.

Picked this bottle up at City Beer in San Francisco and brought it all the way home to NC. Quite a good belgian style ale, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

On draft at Stone bistro. Poured hazy golden amber. Nose had a fresh pininess with bright floral hops and fruity esters from the Belgian yeast. Taste is of nice fresh hops, with a insane spiciness, with a nice Belgian accents. I’d say it’ll hit it’s peak in about 4 years. Excellent brew!!!
